Chapter 2 - The House on the Hudson

Twenty minutes later, I wasn't carrying trays. I was sitting in the back of an armored Maybach cruising northward along the Henry Hudson Parkway, watching the cold rain slick the black asphalt.

Dominic sat across from me in the plush leather interior, a glass of mineral water in his hand, reviewing a series of encrypted documents on an iPad.

"I can't just leave my shift," I said, clutching my small worn canvas bag against my chest. "Mrs. Gable, the floor manager, will fire me. I need this job to pay the rent on my apartment."

Dominic looked up from his screen, a soft, almost paternal expression softening his harsh features. "Olivia, as of twenty minutes ago, I purchased the entire commercial block that includes The Sterling. Mrs. Gable works for you now if you want her to. And as for your rent... ten million dollars was wired to a private escrow account under your name ten minutes ago."

I stared at him, my mouth slightly open. "Ten million... you weren't joking?"

"The Russo family does not joke about debt," Dominic said sternly. "Your father saved my life in the Egyptian desert thirty years ago when our expedition was ambushed by black-market antiquities smugglers. He took a bullet in his shoulder so I could escape with the first fragment of the journal. For thirty years, I have been looking for the remaining pages—and for him. By the time I tracked down his location in Queens two years ago, the fire had already happened. I believed the Hart bloodline was extinguished."

He slid the iPad toward me.

On the screen was a high-resolution satellite image of a massive estate nestled on a rocky cliff overlooking the Hudson River, surrounded by high concrete walls, security towers, and dense pine forest.

"This is my estate in Sleepy Hollow," Dominic explained. "It is the most secure private installation on the East Coast. You will stay there under my protection. Because tomorrow morning, the news of what happened in the Emerald Room will reach the ears of Julian Vance."

The name Julian Vance hit me like a splash of ice water.

My mind raced back to my father’s final months. I remembered him sitting at his desk late at night, whispering on an encrypted satellite phone, his face pale and covered in cold sweat. I remembered him burning stacks of research papers in our metal kitchen sink whenever a black town car lingered too long outside our apartment building.

"Julian Vance..." I whispered. "He was my father's former employer."

"He was our patron," Dominic corrected, his tone turning dark. "Julian Vance is the CEO of Aethelgard Industries. To the public, he is a philanthropist funding renewable energy research and deep-sea exploration. In reality, he is the leader of the Order of the Black Sun—a secret society that has spent centuries seeking the lost technologies of the Pre-Deluge civilization."

Dominic leaned forward, looking into my eyes. "The journal you translated tonight isn't just an ancient book, Olivia. It is the star chart and key matrix for a vault built four thousand feet beneath the bedrock of Manhattan. A vault that contains a power source capable of overriding global communication networks, power grids, and digital systems."

"And my father hidden the key?" I asked.

"Your father realized what Vance intended to do with that power," Dominic said softly. "William wasn't just a linguist, Olivia. He was the last guardian of the vault. He broke the master key into three pieces, hid them across the globe, and translated the activation journal into a dialect that only he—and his chosen apprentice—could read."

The Maybach slowed as it turned off the highway, passing through a set of massive, reinforced iron gates that swung open automatically. The car glided up a winding asphalt driveway bordered by ancient oak trees, coming to a halt beneath the grand stone porte-cochère of a Tudor-style manor.

As the driver opened my door, Marcus—Dominic's security chief—stepped out from the estate's main entry, holding a tactical radio.

"Boss," Marcus said, his face grim. "We have a situation. Security perimeter grid four just registered a thermal signature near the river fence. Someone tried to breach our outer sensor array three minutes ago."

Dominic didn't panic. He stepped out of the car, extending a hand to help me out.

"Vance knows," Dominic said coldly. "He knows the Weaver's daughter has emerged."
