Chapter 7 - The Guarded Heart

Two weeks had passed since the night of the attack.
The Romano estate had returned to a calm, immaculate order, though the security was now ironclad. New biometric scanners were installed at every door, the entire staff was replaced with vetted loyalists, and the outer perimeter was guarded by high-tech infrared grid arrays.
Yet, despite the peace, a strange, electric tension had settled between Alessio and me.
I was no longer treated like an employee. I was moved from the small nanny quarter on the second floor to a luxurious guest suite directly adjoining Alessio’s master bedroom. Every evening, dinner was served for just the two of us in the private dining room overlooking the lake—a tradition that started informal and quickly grew into the highlight of my days.
"You're quiet tonight," Alessio said, cutting a piece of prime steak across from me. He wore a simple black cashmere sweater, looking relaxed, dangerously handsome, and entirely unlike a underworld kingpin.
"I was just thinking," I said, swirling the red wine in my glass. "About how much everything changed in fourteen days. My old life at the hospital feels like a fever dream."
"Do you miss it?" he asked, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the polished mahogany table. His gaze locked onto mine with that razor-sharp intensity that always made my breath catch. "The twelve-hour shifts? The cold coffee? The bureaucracy?"
"No," I admitted honestly. "I miss the simplicity, maybe. Knowing where I stand."
"You stand right here," Alessio said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly register. "With me. With Leo."
"Alessio..." I hesitated, setting my glass down. "People are talking. The remaining household staff, the lieutenants who come to your study... they see how you look at me. They know I'm staying in the master wing."
"Let them talk," he said coldly. "In my world, authority isn't given; it is taken and defended. You saved my heir. You showed more courage than half my captains. If anyone in the Outfit has a problem with your presence in this house, they can take it up with my gun."
"I'm not part of your Outfit," I reminded him softly. "I'm a woman from a suburban family whose father was a cop. I don't fit in this world of blood and shadow."
Alessio stood up from his chair and walked around the long table. He stopped right beside my chair, reaching down to take my hand. He pulled me up gently until I was standing inches from his chest.
"You fit right here," he said softly, bringing my hand to his lips and pressing a warm, lingering kiss against my knuckles. "I spent my whole life believing everyone around me had a price. My rivals, my associates... even my own family. And then you stood in front of a gun at two in the morning, holding a pair of forceps, refusing to back down because a child needed you."
"Alessio..." my voice was barely a whisper.
"I didn't fall for you because you saved Leo, Claire," he murmured, his dark eyes burning into mine. "I fell for you because you showed me what loyalty actually looks like."
Before I could process his words, his hand reached behind my neck, sliding into my hair, and he pulled me into a deep, commanding kiss.
It wasn't gentle—it was hungry, possessive, and filled with a desperate intensity that sent a wave of heat shooting through my entire body. My hands found their way to his chest, gripping the fabric of his sweater as I kissed him back, completely surrendering to the storm of emotion I had been suppressing for weeks.
When he finally broke the kiss, his forehead rested against mine, both of us catching our breath in the quiet room.
"Stay," he whispered against my lips. "Not as Leo’s nanny. As my woman."
A knock at the double doors broke the moment.
Dominic stepped into the room, looking pale. "Boss. We have a problem."
Alessio kept one arm firmly around my waist, turning to his lieutenant with an icy glare. "What is it?"
"The Commission," Dominic said quietly. "Don Moretti from the New York syndicate has just landed at O'Hare. He has called an emergency assembly of the Five Families tonight at the Drake Hotel."

Alessio’s jaw tightened. "On what grounds?"
"He claims... he claims you are unfit to lead the Chicago Outfit," Dominic hesitated, glancing at me. "He claims you let a civilian woman control your household and that the attack on your estate was proof of weakness."
