Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

An hour later, the rain had softened into a persistent drizzle over Lake Forest. The strike team had been completely neutralized by Alessio’s personal guard, their bodies removed quietly through the rear service gates before dawn could break.

Inside the grand library, a massive fire crackled in the hearth, throwing warm, flickering light across dark leather armchairs and walls lined with thousands of books.

Marco Romano sat in a chair near the fire, his face pale as chalk, his head buried in his hands. Across from him, Elena was zip-tied to a heavy wooden chair, a tight tourniquet wrapped around her shoulder where my bullet had passed through. Her face was dark with hatred, but her mouth was kept shut by a strip of heavy black tactical tape.

Alessio stood by the mantle, holding a glass of Scotch. I sat on the sofa nearby, rocking a peaceful, sleeping Leo, who had finally drifted off after a full bottle of formula.

"I didn't know, Alessio," Marco sobbed, looking up at his older brother with desperate, bloodshot eyes. "I swear on our mother's grave, I had no idea she was planning this! I thought she loved me! I thought we were going to build a life together!"

"She used your debt to bribe Stefan," Alessio said, his voice quiet, devoid of anger—which made it a hundred times more terrifying. "She took your ring to frame you for our nephew's murder. If Claire hadn't caught the hand movement on the backup feed, I would have executed you myself by sunrise."

Marco flinched as if hit. He turned to look at Elena, horror and disgust waging war on his face. "You monster... you tried to kill a baby? My brother's son?"

Elena simply glared at him through the dark tape, her eyes filled with cold contempt.

"What do we do with her, boss?" Dominic asked, standing near the doorway, leaning heavily on a cane from a leg wound he had sustained downstairs.

Alessio didn't answer immediately. He set his Scotch glass down on the wooden mantelpiece and walked slowly toward me. He looked down at Leo’s small, peaceful face, then raised his gaze to mine.

"You saved him twice in one night," Alessio murmured, his voice softening into something low and profoundly intimate. "You took a bullet for my bloodline."

"I did my job," I said quietly, meeting his gaze. "And I protected a life."

"No," Alessio said, reaching out and gently tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers were warm, rough, and steady. "You did more than that, Claire. You gave this family a core again."

He turned back to face Elena and Marco.

"Elena will be handed over to our international enforcement division," Alessio declared coldly. "She will spend the rest of her life in an isolated facility in Northern Italy, far from money, status, or light. She will never see the sun again."

Elena’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror behind the tape, her body thrashing against the heavy plastic ties, but Dominic simply stepped forward and dragged her chair toward the side exit without a word.

"And Marco," Alessio continued, turning to his trembling brother.

Marco stood up slowly, hanging his head. "I'm ready, Alessio. If you want to put a bullet in me for being a fool... I won't fight you."

Alessio stared at his brother for a long moment. Then, he reached out, placed a hand on Marco’s neck, and pulled him into a brief, hard embrace.

"You're an idiot, Marco," Alessio growled into his ear. "A blind, desperate idiot. But you are my brother. You will surrender your access to the estate accounts. You will move to the New York branch under Uncle Mateo's supervision. You will earn your keep from the bottom up. And if you ever touch a gambling table again, I will break your legs myself."

Marco wiped a tear from his eye, nodding frantically. "Thank you, Alessio. Thank you."

As Marco was led out to prepare for his transfer, the grand library fell into a deep, peaceful quiet. The storm outside was finally beginning to clear, exposing the first faint golden rays of dawn over the estate gardens.

Alessio walked back to the sofa and sat down beside me. The distance between us evaporated.

"The house is clean," he said softly. "The threat is gone."

"Then I suppose... my contract is over," I said, a sudden, heavy feeling dropping into my chest. "You'll want a permanent medical staff now. Professional bodyguards."

May you like

Alessio turned his face toward me, his intense dark eyes searching mine with a hunger that made my pulse race.

"Contract?" he echoed softly. "You think you can just walk away from us now, Claire?"
