Chapter 7 - The Final Signature

The silence in the grand penthouse office was heavy, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.

Dominic knelt on the Persian rug, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold the pen Marcus handed him. He looked up at me one last time, his eyes wide with a pathetic, desperate hope that I would suddenly soften, that I would smile and tell him it was all a bad dream.

I didn't move a muscle. My expression remained as cold and still as marble.

With a choked sob, Dominic lowered his head and slashed his signature across the dotted line of the divorce settlement. He pushed the folder back across the desk, his shoulders slumping as if a physical weight had finally crushed him completely.

"It's done," he whispered into the carpet.

"Marcus," I said without looking down at the papers. "Escort Mr. Vaughn out of the building. Make sure his building access card is deactivated, and ensure he retrieves his personal belongings from the apartment within the hour under supervision."

"Right away, Vivienne," Marcus said, stepping forward and firmly pulling Dominic to his feet.

Dominic didn't resist. He allowed himself to be led toward the private elevator like a ghost, his head bowed, his spirit entirely broken. As the elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the sight of my ex-husband forever, a profound sense of lightness washed over me.

The air in the room suddenly felt cleaner. Brighter.

My father stepped out from the adjoining private study, a soft, proud smile touching the corners of his mouth. He walked over, placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, and looked down at my pregnant belly.

"How are you holding up, sweetheart?" he asked softly.

"Better than ever, Dad," I smiled, leaning into his touch. "I think the baby likes the new office view."

Alexander chuckled, pulling up a chair and sitting beside me. "Well, your mother would have been proud of how you handled that circus. She always said our family doesn't need to shout to be powerful. We just need to wait for the right moment to speak."

"She was right," I said, looking out the massive glass window at the sprawling, beautiful city skyline stretching endlessly beneath us.
