Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The velvet box lay open on the pristine white marble, the million-dollar diamond catching the overhead light and throwing blinding prismatic flashes across the floor.

Amanda let out a shrill, hysterical sob, clawing at the air as the two security guards held her firmly in place. "It wasn't my fault! Chloe told me to do it! She wanted the insurance payout to cover the wedding debts!"

The entire ballroom inhaled sharply. Every eye whipped back toward the bride.

Chloe’s face turned from pale white to a furious, mottled crimson. "Shut up, you stupid bitch! You're lying! She planted it on you!"

"Quiet," Alexander’s voice cracked like a whip, silencing Chloe instantly. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer, crushing authority behind it made even the bravest guests shrink back. He motioned with two fingers toward the ballroom's master security console near the AV booth.

One of my father’s men strode over to the console, inserted a small flash drive into the main terminal, and tapped a few keys. A second later, the massive overhead projector screens—which had previously displayed romantic photo collages of Chloe and her new husband—flickered black.

Then, crisp, high-definition video footage began to play.

It showed the staging room behind the bridal suite three hours before the ceremony. On screen, clear as day, Chloe and Amanda stood leaning over a velvet jewelry tray.

“If we report it missing right after the first toast,” the audio captured Chloe’s voice crystal clear through the room’s sound system, “we can blame Vivienne. Everyone already thinks she’s a gold-digging nobody. The insurance company will pay out the claim within a week, and we can split the cash once the wedding bills are cleared.”

“Are you sure she won't fight back?” Amanda’s recorded voice asked nervously. “Fight back?” Chloe laughed on screen, the exact same cruel laugh she had used against me twenty minutes ago. “That mouse? She doesn't have anyone. Her family is a ghost. Just drop the box in your bag when the search starts and let my mother tear her dress off. It’ll be fun to watch her squirm.”

The video paused on a freeze-frame of Chloe smiling maliciously into the camera.

In the ballroom, the silence was absolute. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents. You could hear the faint, terrified breathing of two hundred guests who suddenly realized they had spent the entire evening cheering for a criminal conspiracy.

Dominic slowly turned his head, staring at his newlywed wife with eyes wide with horror and disbelief.

"Chloe..." Dominic choked out, his voice trembling. "Did you... did you plan this? All of it?"

Chloe spun around, her bridal gown rustling frantically as she grabbed Dominic’s arm. "No! Dominic, listen to me! It’s a deepfake! They altered the video! Your father-in-law is a billionaire, he can fake anything—"

"Don't touch my son," Eleanor hissed, suddenly finding her voice as she slapped Chloe’s hand away. The hypocrisy was breathtaking; just minutes ago, Eleanor had been helping her daughter tear my dress off, and now she was ready to throw Chloe under the bus to save whatever scrap of social standing she had left. "You filthy little con artist! You dragged our family name through the mud!"

"Your family name?" Chloe shrieked, hysteria finally breaking through her composure. "Your family name was bankrupt before we even booked this venue! The catering was bounced on three credit cards! We needed that insurance money!"

The veil of civility had completely vanished. The elegant wedding reception had devolved into a screaming, clawing public disaster.

I stood quietly beside my father, pulling the silk handkerchief tighter around my shoulders, watching the empire they had built on arrogance and cruelty collapse under its own weight.
