Chapter 5 - The Audit

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my father’s corporate penthouse office, casting long, clean lines across the polished walnut desk.
I sat comfortably in a high-backed leather chair, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea, resting my hand gently against my eight-month pregnant belly. The baby gave a soft, reassuring kick, as if sensing the storm had finally cleared.
The heavy oak door opened, and Marcus Vance, my father’s chief corporate investigator and legal counsel, stepped inside, carrying a thick stack of manila folders.
"Good morning, Vivienne," Marcus said with a respectful nod, placing the files on the desk. "How are you feeling after last night?"
"Much lighter, Marcus," I smiled faintly. "What do we have?"
Marcus opened the top folder and slid a series of financial statements across the desk. "As requested, we ran a comprehensive forensic audit on Dominic’s personal accounts, as well as Eleanor and Chloe’s household expenditures over the last three years."
I scanned the numbers. Even I was slightly surprised by what I saw.
"They were deeply in debt," I noted.
"Beyond buried," Marcus corrected. "Chloe’s wedding alone cost four hundred thousand dollars—none of which was paid for. They maxed out twelve different lines of credit using fraudulent asset declarations. Eleanor’s home was already facing foreclosure last month. They were using Dominic’s salary—and whatever cash they could siphon from his corporate expense accounts—to keep up appearances in high society."
"And Dominic?"
"He knew about the debt," Marcus said bluntly. "He didn't know about the jewelry theft scheme specifically, but he knew they were desperate. That's why he was so anxious for you to 'just apologize' and take the blame last night. He thought if you took the heat, they could use your supposed 'guilt' to blackmail your family—though, of course, they had no idea who your family actually was."
I shook my head slowly. "Greed really does make people blind."
"Indeed," Marcus replied, closing the folder. "Furthermore, the police have officially charged Chloe and Amanda with grand larceny and insurance fraud. Bail has been denied because they're classified as flight risks. As for Eleanor, she's currently attempting to sue Chloe for ruining her social reputation, which is providing a wonderful distraction for the tabloids."
"And Dominic?"
"He’s currently sitting in the lobby downstairs," Marcus said, raising an eyebrow. "He’s been there since 7:00 AM. Building security tried to remove him twice, but he refused to leave until he speaks with you."

I set my teacup down on the saucer, the ceramic clinking softly in the quiet room.
"Let him up," I said. "It's time to close the book."
