Chapter 8 - The Night the Ghosts Left

Upstairs, the heavy steel shutters had been rolled back, letting the gentle moonlight flood into the house. The smell of smoke had been cleared, and the estate finally felt like a home again rather than a fortress.
Marisol was sitting on the edge of Leo’s bed. The three boys were tucked comfortably beneath their blankets, the bedside lamp casting a warm, comforting glow across the room. The door was cracked open just an inch, letting a sliver of hallway light stream inside.
Julian stood in the doorway, watching them. For the first time in a year, there was no shadow of fear in his sons' eyes. Leo looked up, smiling sleepily.
"Dad? Are you staying tonight?" Leo asked softly.
Julian’s throat tightened. He walked over, sitting down on the other side of the bed, pulling the blanket up around his sons' shoulders. "Yeah, buddy. I'm staying right here. Every night from now on."
Marisol stood up quietly, slipping toward the door to give the family privacy.
"Marisol, wait," Julian said, standing up and following her out into the hallway.
She turned, her dark eyes reflecting the warm amber light of the corridor. "The threat is gone, Mr. Mercer. Raymond is exposed, the intruders are locked away, and your boys know they are safe. My job here is done."
Julian froze. A strange, sharp ache hit his chest—one that had nothing to do with mafia wars or enemies. It was the sudden realization of what his life would look like if she walked out those front doors.
"Done?" Julian stepped closer to her, his usual intimidating aura completely replaced by raw, vulnerable honesty. "You saved my family, Marisol. You brought light back into this house when I was failing miserably at the only job that actually mattered."
"You don't need a protector anymore, Julian," she whispered, using his first name for the very first time. "You just needed to remember how to be a father."
May you like
"I need more than a protector," Julian said, his gaze dropping to her lips before meeting her eyes again. "I need you. Don't go."
Marisol looked up at him, a soft, genuine smile breaking across her face. She reached out, gently placing her hand over his bruised knuckles. "I wasn't planning on going anywhere."
