Chapter 7 - The Press Conference

At 3:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with over two hundred journalists, camera crews, and corporate analysts. The air buzzed with frantic speculation.

Behind the velvet curtain off-stage, I stood wearing an ivory tailored suit, my palms sweating despite the freezing air conditioning. Outside, my personal security detail—now doubled by Luca’s elite team—was guarding Leo and Maya at a secure, undisclosed private location in Lake Forest.

Luca stood beside me, adjusting his silver cufflinks.

"Are you ready?" he asked softly, looking down at me.

"I hate this, Luca," I admitted honestly, looking at the blinding camera flashes bleeding through the curtain edge. "I built a quiet, peaceful life. I didn't want this noise for our kids."

"I know," Luca murmured, stepping closer, his hand hovering inches above my waist, waiting for permission before gently resting his palm against my lower back. The familiar warmth of his touch sent a shiver through my spine. "I promise you, once we break Harrison Shaw’s leverage today, I will build a fortress around your peace. Just trust me one last time, Nia."

I looked into his dark eyes and saw no trace of the distant, cold husband who had abandoned me five years ago. I saw a man fighting for his family with every weapon in his arsenal.

"Okay," I whispered. "Let's do it."

The curtain parted.

The moment Luca and I walked onto the elevated stage, a deafening roar of camera shutters and shouted questions filled the ballroom.

“Mr. Moretti! Is it true you have secret children?!” “Ms. Carter! Are you suing Moretti Global for back child support?!” “Is Evelyn Shaw filing for divorce?!”

Luca stepped up to the podium, ignoring the chaos. He raised one single hand, and the room instantly fell into a dead, obedient quiet.

"Good afternoon," Luca said, his commanding voice projecting effortlessly through the microphones. "I have a brief statement to make, and I will not be taking questions."

He adjusted his mic, his gaze sweeping over the sea of reporters.

"Six years ago, my marriage to Nia Carter ended due to my own personal failures and catastrophic miscommunications. Five years ago, Nia gave birth to our twins, Leo and Maya Moretti. Due to my own negligence, I was unaware of their existence until recently."

A massive collective gasp echoed through the room.

Luca turned his head, looking straight into the camera lens of the primary news network owned by Harrison Shaw.

"Let me be unequivocally clear," Luca stated, his tone dropping into a icy, lethal register. "Leo and Maya are my acknowledged, legal, and sole heirs. Any attempt by media organizations, private entities, or competing corporate interests to slander their mother, publish their images, or interfere with their safety will be met with immediate, unyielding legal and financial retaliation. Moretti Global has allocated a two-hundred-million-dollar litigation budget specifically for this purpose."

Beside the stage, I saw Evelyn Shaw’s father, Harrison, standing near the exit doors, his face turning an angry, blotchy purple as he realized Luca had just dismantled his entire blackmail scheme on live national television.

Luca turned to me, offering his hand in front of two hundred flashing cameras.

I took it. His grip was strong, warm, and absolute.
