Chapter 3 - The Midnight Knock

By 8:00 PM, the quiet, tree-lined suburb of Oak Park was wrapped in a thick blanket of freezing rain. Inside my modest, two-story craftsman home, the atmosphere was cozy, filled with the soft ambient noise of a Disney movie playing in the living room.

Leo and Maya were on the rug, piecing together a wooden puzzle, completely oblivious to the earthquake that had struck our lives earlier that afternoon.

I stood in the kitchen, leaning against the marble counter, staring blankly at a mug of chamomile tea that had long gone cold. My mind was racing. I knew how Luca Moretti operated. When he wanted an asset, he deployed legal teams, forensic accountants, and private security until resistance became mathematically impossible. I had managed to hide the twins in plain sight because he had never looked for them. Now that he knew, the full force of the Moretti empire would come knocking.

Right on cue, a heavy black Cadillac Escalade pulled up to my curb, its headlights cutting through the sheets of rain.

Two seconds later, my doorbell rang.

I took a deep breath, walked to the front hallway, and checked the security camera feed on my phone. Luca stood on my porch. He had stripped off his suit jacket, wearing only a rain-soaked white dress shirt with the top buttons undone and dark trousers. He looked wild, desperate, and utterly undone.

I opened the door three inches, keeping the heavy brass security chain engaged.

"Leave, Luca," I said firmly through the crack. "I will call the local police for harassment."

"Call them," Luca said, his voice raw from the freezing wind. "Let them come, Nia. Let the press come. Let the whole city of Chicago watch me stand on your porch all night. I am not leaving until you talk to me."

"You don't command me anymore!" I hissed, tightening my grip on the door handle. "You gave up that right when you signed the dissolution agreement!"

"I didn't know!" he shouted, his voice cracking against the sound of the rain. "I didn't know I had a son and a daughter! You let me live in a hollowed-out shell of a life while my children grew up in another town! How could you keep them from me, Nia? How could you be that cruel?!"

"Cruel?!" I opened the door wide, held back only by the chain, my eyes blazing with years of suppressed rage. "You threw me away, Luca! You sat across from me in our kitchen and told me you didn't love me anymore because you thought I was useless to your legacy! You didn't want me—you wanted an heir! Why would I hand my innocent newborn babies over to a man who measured his love by fertility charts?!"

Luca fell completely silent. The harsh truth hit him like a physical collapse. He stepped closer to the door mesh, his forehead coming to rest against the cold wooden frame.

"Nia..." he whispered, tears mixing with the rain tracking down his face. "Please. Just let me see them. Just five minutes. I won't say anything to confuse them. I just need to look at them."

Before I could answer, a small voice echoed from the end of the hallway.

"Mommy? Who is the wet man at the door?"
