Chapter 4 - A Father’s First Touch

I turned around sharply. Maya was standing near the entrance to the living room, rubbing her eyes, clutching her stuffed yellow giraffe.

Luca’s gaze drifted past me, locking onto our daughter. A soft, shuddering breath escaped his chest, his hands trembling as he reached toward the door frame.

"Maya..." he breathed softly, speaking her name for the very first time.

I looked at my daughter, then at the man who had once been my entire universe. I knew that if I kept the door shut tonight, Luca’s lawyers would serve me with an emergency custody injunction by eight o'clock tomorrow morning. If I wanted to maintain control over this situation, I needed to manage Luca’s emotions, not inflame them.

"Unclasp your hands, stay in the entryway, and do not make any sudden movements," I commanded coldly, reaching up to unhook the security chain.

I opened the door.

Luca stepped inside, bringing the cold scent of rain, expensive cologne, and ozone into my home. He stood on the entryway rug, water dripping from his dark hair onto the hardwood floor, looking terrified to move a single muscle, as if a sharp step might break the illusion.

Maya took two small steps forward, looking up at him with frank, unfiltered childhood curiosity. "You were at the restaurant. You made Mommy's tea get cold."

Luca dropped heavily to his knees right there on the entryway rug, bringing himself down to her eye level. He clasped his hands behind his back, honoring my condition, though every fiber of his body looked desperate to gather her into his arms.

"I'm sorry about the tea, sweetheart," Luca said, his deep voice shaking with profound vulnerability. "I didn't mean to make your mommy sad."

Leo walked out from the living room then, holding a plastic dinosaur, stepping beside his twin sister. He looked at Luca, his brow instantly furrowing into that iconic Moretti crease.

"You have dark hair like me," Leo noted bluntly.

Luca let out a choked, tearful laugh, a sound so full of agony and joy that I had to look away to keep my own tears from falling. "I do, buddy. I have hair just like yours."

"Are you Mommy's friend?" Maya asked, tilting her head.

Luca looked up at me for a split second, his dark eyes pleading for guidance, before looking back at the kids. "I used to be. A long time ago. I came by to... to see if you were doing okay."

"We're doing great," Leo declared proudly, holding up his dinosaur. "Mommy made us pancakes for dinner because it was raining."

"Pancakes sound wonderful," Luca whispered, wiping a stray tear from his cheek with the back of his hand. "The best dinner in the world."
