Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Vance Harbor

The next morning, the financial world woke up to a bombshell.

Acting on the evidence I had provided to the court-appointed receiver, the district attorney’s office had officially filed charges against Arthur Vance for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and grand larceny. By noon, the story was the lead segment on the business news networks.

"CRISIS AT VANCE HARBOR: CO-FOUNDER ARRESTED AMID MILLIONS IN MISSING FUNDS," the news banner flashed across the screen.

The security footage showed my father being led out of the Vance Harbor corporate headquarters in handcuffs, his head bowed as reporters shouted questions at him. Beside him, my two brothers were being escorted out by building security, their corporate keycards confiscated, their executive privileges revoked.

They had spent their entire lives treating the company like a personal inheritance, spending money they never earned, while I sat at the kitchen island learning the actual work from my mother. Now, they were left in the cold, their reputations permanently stained, their country club memberships cancelled by nightfall.

At 2:00 PM, I walked into the Vance Harbor corporate building. The atmosphere in the lobby was frantic; employees were standing in small groups, whispering anxiously about their future and the impending bankruptcy of the shipping line.

I took the elevator straight to the top floor—the executive suite.

When the doors opened, Arthur Pendelton, the head of the company's minority shareholder board, was waiting for me. He looked exhausted, a stack of legal resignations in his hands.

"Miss Vance," Arthur said, his voice filled with a newfound respect as he extended his hand. "The board just concluded an emergency session. Your father has been officially stripped of his title as CEO. The minority shareholders are terrified of a total collapse."

"The company won't collapse, Arthur," I said, walking past him into the massive corner office that used to belong to my father. I stood by the grand window, looking out over the harbor where our massive cargo ships were docked. "The core logistics are still solid. The routes are secure. The only thing that was broken was the leadership."

"The board wants to know who you intend to nominate as the temporary chairperson," Arthur asked, pulling out his notepad. "We need a name to reassure the investors before the market opens tomorrow."

I turned around, sitting down at the massive mahogany desk—the exact spot where my mother had once told me to never let a man make me feel small.

"You don't need to look for a nominee, Arthur," I said clearly. "As the legal executioner of the Eleanor Vance Estate, I control fifty-two percent of the voting shares. Effective immediately, I am taking over as the CEO of Vance Harbor Group."

Arthur stared at me, his jaw dropping slightly. He looked at the quiet girl who had been the joke of the courtroom just forty-eight hours ago, and he realized that the empire hadn't been lost. It had simply returned to its rightful heir.
