Chapter 3 - The Frozen Assets

The courtroom erupted into a flurry of gasps and whispers. The reporters in the front row began typing furiously on their laptops. The carefully constructed image of Arthur Vance, the grieving, honorable widower, had just been shattered into a million pieces.

Judge Halpern flipped through the pages of the binder, his brow furrowing deeper with every line item he read. The forensic accounting was flawless. My mother hadn't just given me data; she had given me the roadmap to my father's ruin.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Halpern said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low tone as he looked at my father. "These bank routing numbers... they match the main corporate treasury account of Vance Harbor Group. And the authorized signature on these wire transfers is yours."

"Your Honor, I... I can explain," our family attorney stammered, stepping in front of my father. "My client was managing diverse international investments on behalf of the estate. This is a highly complex corporate strategy that Miss Vance clearly does not understand due to her lack of business experience."

"I understand it perfectly," I countered, standing tall at my table. "I understand it well enough to know that under Section 4B of the Vance Harbor Group corporate charter, any transfer of assets exceeding five hundred thousand dollars requires the explicit, written co-signature of the majority shareholder. My mother never signed those papers. Her signatures on pages eighty through ninety-five are forged."

"Forged?!" the judge echoed.

"Yes, Your Honor. We had them analyzed by a certified handwriting expert. The digital signatures were stamped from my father's office computer while my mother was heavily sedated in the ICU at Mount Sinai Hospital. I have the medical logs right here to prove she was unconscious on the exact day and hour those wires were approved."

My father sank back into his leather chair, the color completely draining from his face. The navy suit that cost more than my car suddenly looked like a prison uniform waiting to happen.

"This court has heard enough for today," Judge Halpern said, slamming his gavel down with a resounding crack that made my brothers flinch. "In light of this evidence, I am issuing an immediate, emergency injunction. All assets belonging to the Eleanor Vance Estate, including the fifty-two percent share of Vance Harbor Group, are hereby frozen under court supervision."

"Your Honor, no!" my father begged, standing up. "That will halt our shipping operations! It will ruin the company's credit!"

"What ruins a company, Mr. Vance, is a CEO who treats the corporate treasury like a personal casino," Judge Halpern snapped. "Furthermore, I am appointing an independent, temporary receiver to manage the estate's interests until a full evidentiary hearing can be held. And Miss Vance?"

I looked up at the bench. "Yes, Your Honor?"

"Given your intimate knowledge of these accounts, you will assist the court-appointed receiver as the primary consultant. This court will see you all back here in two weeks. And Mr. Vance? I suggest you get a very good criminal defense attorney. You're going to need one."
