Chapter 6 - The Awakening of Music
The morning sun flooded the grand living room of the Park Avenue penthouse with radiant, golden light.
Elena sat at the magnificent Steinway grand piano I had ordered delivered and installed in the center of the room at dawn. Her long, slender fingers hovered above the ivory keys, trembling with a mixture of awe and long-suppressed grief.
Beside her on the velvet bench sat Sophie, dressed in a brand-new cashmere dress, holding a newly bought plush gray rabbit, watching her mother with wide, expectant eyes.
"Go ahead, Elena," I said softly, standing by the French doors with a cup of espresso in hand. "The piano is tuned to your touch."
Elena pressed the first chord.
A rich, crystalline resonance bloomed through the penthouse, carrying the opening notes of a classical Chopin nocturne. Her shoulders relaxed; her eyes closed, and for the first time in six years, the heavy veil of exhaustion and sorrow lifted from her face, replaced by the brilliant, luminous beauty of the artist I had fallen in love with on 54th Street.
Sophie clapped her hands in delight, resting her head against Elena’s waist as the music soared toward the vaulted ceiling.
When the final note faded into the quiet morning, Elena looked up at me, tears streaming freely down her cheeks—tears of healing, of peace, and of unburdened joy.
"My father used to play that piece when the storms were heavy over the lake," Elena whispered.
I walked over to the piano, placing my hand gently over hers on the keys. "Your father's name has been cleared, Elena. The council has formally struck his debt from the family registry. The Valenti estate in Palermo has been restored in your name."

Elena turned her face into my palm, kissing my calloused skin, her heart beating steady and strong against my fingers. "You brought us back from the dead, Matteo."
"No," I replied, looking down at our laughing daughter who was now pressing the high C-sharp key. "Sophie walked into my lobby and saved my soul."
