Chapter 2 - The Reopened File

By noon, my estate was locked down under high-grade security. No one entered, no one left. Detective Marcus Vance, one of the few clean men left on the Chicago police force who owed his career to an old favor of mine, sat across from me in my private study.

Between us lay the original, yellowing case file from the night my wife Elena died. Beside it rested a fresh DNA kit containing a cheek swab I had personally taken from Noah an hour prior, after Maria brought him quietly through the gates.

Seeing him for the first time in six years had nearly broken me. He was taller, thinner, with my late wife's posture and my own quiet gaze. The scar on his temple was faint, but undeniable. He didn't recognize me—to him, I was just the solemn man in the dark suit who bought his mother's bread—but he held the silver bracelet tight in his fist.

"The official report from six years ago states three bodies were burnt beyond recognition inside the Mercedes," Vance said, flipping through the pages. "Your wife, your driver, and a child."

"The child wasn't mine," I said, my voice cold as iron. "Whoever ambushed Elena’s car didn't just carry out a hit. They took my son from the back seat before setting the vehicle ablaze, then planted another body to make me stop searching."

Vance paused, his pen hovering over the paper. "To pull off a body swap at a active crime scene six years ago, someone had to compromise the state coroner's office and control the initial perimeter. That isn't street gang work, boss. That’s top-level coordination."

"Or someone inside my own family," I replied.

The realization hit like a physical blow. The shipping containers stuck at the port, the sudden territorial pressure from rival families, the unsolved ambush six years ago—it was all connected. Whoever took Matteo hadn't done it out of mercy; they had used him as leverage, waiting for the right moment to destroy me from within.

Vance signed the emergency order to unseal the forensic records. "If this DNA matches, Mr. Moretti, this isn't just a cold case anymore. It's an active kidnapping and treason investigation."

"No," I said, rising from my desk and walking to the window overlooking the rain-swept lawn where Noah was playing under guard. "It's a war."
