Chapter 6 - Sophia Carter. Always.

Six months later.
The spring sun hung warm and golden over the hills of Alpine, New Jersey. The estate’s gardens were in full bloom, filled with white roses, lavender, and vibrant green hedges.
A gentle breeze blew across the stone terrace, where a large wooden table was set with fine china, fresh fruits, and sparkling crystal glasses.
Laughter echoed across the manicured lawn.
Six-year-old Emma—wearing a bright pink party dress and a silver princess tiara—was chasing her golden retriever puppy across the grass, holding a soft pretzel in one hand and her beloved grocery bag of "treasures" in the other.
Watching her from a plush rattan sofa on the terrace was Margaret, a warm, soft-spoken tutor and nanny whom Alessandro had hired to oversee Emma’s education, along with Dr. Mercer, who was enjoying a glass of red wine.
Sophia stood near the edge of the stone balustrade, looking out over the private lake below.
She wore an exquisite emerald green silk dress that complemented her warm brown eyes and glowing, healthy skin. The pallor and sickness of Washington Heights had vanished entirely, replaced by a radiant, timeless beauty and a calm, peaceful grace.
Behind her, quiet footsteps sounded on the stone tiles.
Alessandro walked up beside her, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her soft back against his chest. He rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her jasmine perfume.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" Alessandro asked softly, his hand resting over hers against the stone railing.
Sophia leaned back against his strong chest, looking down at the glittering blue sapphire ring resting on her ring finger.
"I was thinking about the rain," Sophia whispered, turning her head slightly to look into his green eyes. "About that cold, dark street in Washington Heights... and how I thought my life was over."
Alessandro turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him. He looked down into her warm brown eyes with a devotion that six years of separation had only forged into absolute steel.
"Your life wasn't over, Sophia," Alessandro said gently, smoothing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. "It was just waiting for our daughter to bring me back to you."
"She really is your daughter," Sophia smiled, a soft tear of pure happiness touching her cheek. "Stubborn, brave, and completely impossible to ignore."
"She’s a Moretti," Alessandro chuckled softly, pulling a small black velvet box from his coat pocket.
Sophia blinked, her heart skipping a beat. "Alessandro? What is that?"
Alessandro dropped smoothly onto one knee on the sunny stone terrace.
He opened the velvet box. Inside lay a breathtaking, custom-designed platinum wedding band, intricately set with small emeralds surrounding a magnificent central diamond—designed specifically to fit seamlessly alongside the original sapphire ring.
"Fourteen years ago, I was a foolish young man who engraved a ring because I thought love was simple," Alessandro said, his voice deep, rich, and trembling with genuine emotion. "Six years ago, you taught me that true love is sacrifice, courage, and unconditional strength."
He looked up into her eyes, his green gaze fixed entirely on her face.
"Sophia Carter," Alessandro said softly. "Will you marry me? Properly this time. Before God, our daughter, and the whole world?"
Sophia covered her mouth with both hands, tears of joy spilling freely down her radiant cheeks. She dropped to her knees right beside him on the stone terrace, throwing her arms around his neck, pressing her lips to his in a deep, passionate kiss that wiped away six years of pain, cold nights, and lingering fear.
"Yes," Sophia wept happily against his lips. "Yes, Alessandro! A thousand times yes!"
Over on the grass, Emma stopped playing with the puppy. She turned around, saw her mother and father hugging on the terrace, and let out a triumphant cheer.
"Yay! Daddy and Mommy!" Emma shouted, sprinting across the lawn as fast as her small legs could carry her, her pink dress fluttering in the warm spring breeze.
She scrambled onto the terrace and threw her arms around both of them, sandwiching herself between her mother and father.
Alessandro pulled both of his women tightly into his arms, holding them against his heart as the warm sun bathed the Alpine estate in brilliant, golden light.
He looked down at the sapphire ring shining on Sophia’s finger, its scratched engraving catching the light:
May you like
Sophia Carter. Always.
The shadows of the past were gone. The betrayals were vanquished. And beneath the clear blue sky, the Moretti family was finally home.
