Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the St. Regis

The Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel in Midtown Manhattan was an opulent fortress of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and dark velvet drapes.
Seated around a forty-foot mahogany conference table were the leaders, Underbosses, and senior capos of New York's Five Syndicate Families. Fifty heavily armed private security guards lined the perimeter of the room, their hands resting near their shoulder holsters.
At the center of the table sat Dominic Moretti.
He wore an exquisite silk suit, a gold watch glinting on his wrist, a smirking, arrogant expression plastered across his face. Beside him rested a thick leather briefcase containing the forged probate documents for the Carter Maritime Trust.
"Gentlemen," Dominic said, leaning forward and placing his hands flat on the table, his voice oozing with theatrical authority. "We have waited twenty minutes past the scheduled start time. My brother, Alessandro, has clearly proven once again that his personal grief over a dead civilian mistress from six years ago has rendered him emotionally unstable and incapable of leading the Moretti family."
The capos from the Lucchese and Genovese families shifted uncomfortably in their seats, whispering among themselves.
Dominic stood up, sweeping his arrogant gaze across the room. "Under Section 4 of the Syndicate Charter, I am formally moving to declare Alessandro Moretti unfit for leadership. I request an immediate vote to grant me temporary chairmanship of the family assets—including the forty million dollar expansion into the Brooklyn maritime shipping corridor."
"That's a very impressive speech, Dominic," a deep, baritone voice echoed from the heavy mahogany entrance doors.
The iron doors swung open with a booming thud.
The room fell into breathless silence.
Alessandro Moretti stepped into the ballroom. He was dressed in an immaculate black dinner jacket, his stride powerful, his green eyes burning with a cold, terrifying intensity that made two rival capos instinctively step back.
Behind him walked Marco Rizzi, flanked by twenty elite, tactical security officers carrying suppressed automatic weapons.
Dominic’s smirk faltered slightly, but he quickly forced a patronizing laugh. "Alessandro... you actually showed up. I was just telling the commission that your grief has made you late."
"I wasn't late, Dominic," Alessandro said smoothly, walking down the length of the table until he stood directly at the head, opposite his brother. "I was simply granting you enough time to dig your own grave."
Dominic’s eyes narrowed. "What absurdity are you talking about? The commission is voting on leadership succession today—"
"The commission is attending a trial today," Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so dark and absolute that even the rival Dons fell silent.
Alessandro raised his left hand and snapped his fingers.
Marco stepped forward, carrying a large briefcase. He opened it, pulling out a stack of documents, audio tapes, and a high-definition tablet. He pressed play on the tablet, connecting it wirelessly to the room's massive digital presentation screens mounted on the walls.
Instantly, the wall screens lit up with crystal-clear high-definition forensic reports, bank statements, and wiretap transcripts.
"What is this nonsense?!" Dominic shouted, his face turning dark red.
"These are the complete financial audits of Vanguard Freight Inc.," Alessandro announced, his voice ringing through the ballroom like a bronze bell. "Extracted directly from your private servers in Long Island three hours ago by federal financial analysts working under my personal protection."
The rival Dons leaned forward, their eyes widening as they scanned the screens.
"Six years ago," Alessandro continued, walking slowly around the table toward Dominic, "Dominic Moretti forged land deeds, extorted a civilian woman, and established an unauthorized, untaxed smuggling ring behind the Commission's back, stealing fifty million dollars in family revenues."
"He's lying!" Dominic shrieked, pointing an angry finger at Alessandro. "These documents are forged!"
"Are the pharmaceutical reports forged too, Dominic?" Alessandro asked coldly.
He tapped the screen. A new document appeared—the official chemical analysis from Dr. Mercer detailing the thallium sulfate poison recovered from Sophia’s medicine bottles, alongside wiretapped phone calls between Dominic and Dr. Julian Vance arranging the slow assassination of Sophia Carter.
Dominic’s breath hitched. His arrogance shattered into pure, terrifying panic. "You... you couldn't... she died yesterday!"
"She didn't die, brother," Alessandro said softly.
The side doors of the ballroom opened.
Rolling through the doorway in an elegant dark dress, flanked by two private security officers, came Sophia Carter. Sitting safely in her lap, holding the polished gold-and-sapphire ring, was five-year-old Emma.
The entire room gasped.
Dominic backed up against the mahogany table, his face draining of all color, looking as if he had seen a ghost rising from the abyss. "Sophia... no... no, it's impossible..."
Sophia looked directly into the eyes of the man who had terrified her for six years, her voice clear, strong, and unwavering:
"You threatened to murder the man I loved," Sophia said, her voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "You stole my father's legacy. You poisoned my body. And you tried to steal my daughter's future. But you failed, Dominic."
The oldest Don in the room—Don Luciano of the Genovese family—stood up slowly, his face dark with profound disgust as he looked at Dominic.
"You poisoned a woman to steal a child's trust fund?" Don Luciano rasped, his voice dripping with absolute contempt. "You brought dishonor and unauthorized federal eyes upon all five families for six years?"
"Luciano, listen to me—" Dominic begged, sweat pouring down his forehead as he reached frantically for his sidearm inside his jacket.
Before his hand could even touch the leather holster, Marco Rizzi stepped forward, slamming the butt of his sidearm viciously across Dominic’s jaw.
CRACK.
Dominic collapsed onto the marble floor, spitting blood and teeth, groaning in agony.
Alessandro stepped up to his fallen brother, looking down at him with dark, unyielding eyes. He pulled the gold-and-sapphire ring from Emma’s small hand and held it up before Dominic’s swollen eyes.
"Fourteen years ago, I engraved this ring with a promise," Alessandro whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute authority. "Sophia Carter. Always. You thought a piece of paper and six years of lies could destroy that promise?"
Alessandro turned to the Five Families Commission.
"Dominic Moretti is stripped of his title, his assets, and his name," Alessandro declared. "His smuggling corridors are surrendered to the commission. His personal fortune is seized and transferred to the Carter Maritime Trust as restitution."

Don Luciano nodded slowly, resting his heavy hands on the table. "The Commission approves. Take him away."
Four of Alessandro’s guards grabbed Dominic by his arms, dragging the screaming, weeping traitor out through the rear service doors, closing the heavy iron barriers behind them forever.
