Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Christmas morning arrived with a clear, golden sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. I sat on my oceanfront patio, drinking fresh coffee from a fine porcelain cup, watching the pelicans dive into the turquoise waves.

Around ten o'clock, my phone rang. It was Ethan.

“Merry Christmas, Mom,” he said, his voice sounding tired and strained.

“Merry Christmas, Ethan,” I replied smoothly. “How was your dinner last night?”

“It was... fine. Actually, it was kind of a disaster,” he admitted with a heavy sigh. “The hotel lost our reservation for the main dining room. They moved us to a tiny back patio near the kitchen. Eleanor was furious, Bianca was crying, and the service was awful. We spent thousands of dollars for a terrible evening.”

I took a quiet sip of coffee. “I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Yeah, well... listen, Mom. We’re sitting in the hotel lobby right now trying to figure out what to do for Christmas lunch. Every restaurant in Palm Beach is completely booked. Bianca’s family is fighting, Noah is upset, and honestly, I just want a quiet place to sit down.” He paused, sounding genuinely desperate. “Where are you staying? Is there a park nearby or a small café where we could bring some takeout and meet you?”

I looked around my vast patio, where a long teak dining table was set for a feast. My private chef—whom I had ultimately persuaded to stay for a generous bonus—had prepared a roast turkey, glazed ham, roasted vegetables, and fresh pastries.

“Actually, Ethan, you don't need to get takeout,” I said calmly. “Why don't you bring everyone over to my place for lunch?”

Silence on the line. Then Ethan laughed nervously. “Mom, there are nine of us including Bianca’s sister and her husband. Your hotel room or rental unit won't fit nine people.”

“It will fit fine,” I said. “I’ll send an address to your phone. Be here at noon.”

Before he could argue, I hung up and texted him the directions to my estate.

An hour later, I stood near the front gates of the property as a large luxury SUV approached. The gates opened automatically, allowing the vehicle to roll down the long, palm-lined driveway. Through the windshield, I could see Ethan’s bewildered face as he took in the manicured gardens, the fountains, and the massive estate towering before them.

The SUV came to a stop in the courtyard. The doors opened slowly, and everyone stepped out in stunned silence. Eleanor was staring with her mouth slightly open. Bianca looked completely disoriented.

Ethan walked toward me as if in a trance. “Mom... what is this place? Did you get a job here as a house sitter?”

I smiled, pulling a velvet box from my pocket and holding it out to him.
