Chapter 3 - A Chance Encounter

On Christmas Eve afternoon, the sun was bright and hot overhead. I decided to walk through the town square near the luxury shopping district, enjoying the holiday music playing from the upscale boutiques. As I browsed a small flower shop, I heard a familiar, bright voice calling out outside.

“Daddy, look! The coconut tree has lights on it!”

I stepped out of the flower shop and froze. Standing on the sidewalk just thirty feet away was my eight-year-old grandson, Noah. He was wearing a neat polo shirt and shorts, holding a giant melting ice cream cone. A few paces behind him were Ethan and Bianca, along with Bianca’s mother, Eleanor, who was dressed impeccably in silk and gold jewelry.

My heart hammered in my chest. Instinctively, I pulled my sun hat down slightly, but Noah turned and made eye contact before I could step back into the shadows.

“Grandma?” Noah shouted, his face lighting up with pure joy. He dropped his ice cream cone onto the pavement and ran directly toward me. “Grandma Eleanor! Look, Grandma Vance is here!”

He threw his arms around my waist, almost knocking me off balance. I wrapped my arms around him tightly, smelling the sweet scent of vanilla and sunshine on his skin.

“Oh, my sweet boy,” I whispered, kissing the top of his head. “I missed you so much.”

Ethan and Bianca stopped dead in their tracks. Ethan’s face turned pale, while Bianca’s expression instantly froze into a polite, icy mask. Eleanor stepped up beside them, looking down her nose at my simple cotton dress and canvas shoes.

“Mom?” Ethan stammered, stepping forward. “What... what are you doing here? In Palm Beach?”

“I could ask you the same thing,” I said softly, releasing Noah but keeping a loving hand on his shoulder. “You mentioned you were coming down, but you didn't mention where you were staying.”

Bianca cleared her throat, placing a manicured hand on Ethan’s arm. “We are staying at The Grand, Evelyn. My parents reserved a suite for us. It’s a holiday tradition for our family.” She paused, looking around as if expecting to see a budget tour bus nearby. “Are you here on a day trip? With a senior travel group?”

The condescension in her voice was so thick it was almost laughable. She assumed I was taking a cheap day-bus from an inland retirement community.

“No, Bianca,” I replied calmly. “I’m staying nearby.”

“Oh,” Eleanor chimed in, adjusting her sunglasses. “Well, the hotel motels on the highway fill up so quickly this time of year. How fortunate you found a place to sleep.”

Ethan looked visibly uncomfortable, shifting his weight from foot to foot. “Mom, we’re actually on our way to early dinner reservations. We have a very strict schedule tonight.”

Noah looked up at me with wide eyes. “Grandma, can you come eat with us? Please?”

Bianca’s eyes narrowed slightly, though her smile remained fixed. “Darling, Grandma’s hotel probably has its own dinner service. Besides, our table is already set for eight.”

I looked at my son, waiting to see if he would speak up. If he would say, “We can add one more chair.” If he would say, “Mom, join us.”

He looked down at his shoes. “Yeah, buddy. Space is tight tonight. But maybe we can catch up later, Mom.”

“Of course,” I said softly, looking directly into Ethan’s eyes until he flinched. “Enjoy your dinner at The Grand.”
