Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

"A camera?" Margaret sneered, though her voice wobbled slightly. "You put a hidden camera in my house? That's illegal! You invasive little—"

"Shut up, Margaret," I cut her off with such terrifying force that the older woman actually recoiled.

I placed the tablet in the center of the dining table, turned the volume up to maximum, and pressed play.

The bright 4K video filled the screen.

The entire room watched in absolute, stunned silence as the midnight footage began to play.

On the screen, the living room was dark. The timestamp clearly read: 1:32 AM - THIS MORNING.

A figure walked into the frame.

It wasn't Emma.

It was Lauren.

The audio was crystal clear. Every sound, every rustle of clothing, echoed through the quiet dining room.

On the video, Lauren picked up Margaret’s velvet jewelry box, pulled out the gold heirloom bracelet, and held it up with a cruel, triumphant smirk.

Margaret’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. "What... what is this?"

"Keep watching, Mom," I said coldly.

On the video, Lauren opened her black leather pouch, revealing stacks of hundred-dollar bills, stolen watches, and my silver necklace. Then, she walked over to Margaret’s winter coat in the hallway closet and slipped the gold bracelet deep inside the inner lining.

Then came the audio of the phone call.

Lauren’s voice boomed through the tablet speakers, clear as a bell:

"Hey, Greg... I got the cash and the gold. The old lady doesn't suspect a thing. She thinks that little brat Emma stole it... My mother shaved the kid's head and locked her out on the balcony... They're so focused on hating Clara and her daughter that nobody's even looking at me..."

The video paused.

The silence in the dining room was deafening.

You could hear a pin drop on the hardwood floor.

Mark stood frozen, staring at his sister on the screen, then turning his head slowly to look at Lauren standing at the end of the table.

Lauren was shaking violently, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "I... Mark, wait! That's fake! That's an AI video! Clara edited that! She set me up!"

"An AI video?" Maya chimed in from the doorway, stepping forward with her phone still recording. "Lauren, that feed was streamed live to a secure cloud server with a digital timestamp and encrypted IP metadata. Any forensic tech team can verify its authenticity in five minutes."

"Lauren..." Margaret whispered, her voice trembling as she stood up from her chair, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "Lauren... you... you took my mother's bracelet?"

"Mom, no! Listen to me!" Lauren sobbed, backing away toward the living room wall. "I had to! I owed money! Some guys were threatening to break my legs!"

"You lied to me!" Margaret shrieked, her face turning a dark, dangerous purple. "You sat there and watched me shave that brat's head! You let me accuse Clara!"

"You were the one who wanted to shave her head!" Lauren screamed back, her polite mask completely shattering into ugly rage. "You hate Clara! You've been looking for an excuse to kick her out of this family for four years! I just gave you what you wanted!"

Richard stood up from his chair, his face contorted in disgust as he stared at his daughter. "Fifty thousand dollars?! Lauren, have you been gambling again?!"

"Yes!" Lauren yelled, tears streaming down her face. "And I took your Rolex too, Dad! I sold it three weeks ago! Because you guys never give me anything while you hand Mark everything!"

The dining room erupted into chaotic, screaming madness.

Margaret was sobbing and screaming at Lauren, Richard was bellowing at the top of his lungs, and Lauren was shrieking back, exposing every filthy secret, lie, and betrayal this family had hidden behind their polished mahogany doors for years.

Mark stood in the middle of the storm, his head in his hands, looking entirely broken.

I didn't say a word. I simply leaned over, picked up my tablet, and tapped a single icon on the screen.

I opened the front door of the apartment.

Standing in the carpeted hallway outside were two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department, flanked by a female detective holding a notepad.

"Officer," I said calmly, stepping aside. "The thief is inside. And the video evidence has already been transmitted to your department's server."
