Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the House

"I knew it!" Maya gasped, leaning over my shoulder as we stared at the tablet screen. "That poisonous little snake!"

On the screen, Lauren didn't just hold the gold bracelet. She slipped it into a velvet pouch inside her jacket pocket. Then, she pulled out a small black leather pouch from her purse.

She unzipped it.

Inside were three thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills, two designer watches belonging to Richard, and my own missing silver necklace.

Lauren was systematic. She walked over to the hallway closet, pulled down an old winter coat that belonged to Margaret, and slipped the stolen gold bracelet deep inside the inner lining.

She wasn't just stealing the heirloom—she was hiding it where she could retrieve it later, all while letting the blame rest squarely on my three-year-old daughter.

Why?

The feed captured Lauren pulling out her phone and making a call on speaker. Because the camera had a high-sensitivity microphone, her voice echoed clearly through my tablet speakers.

"Hey, Greg," Lauren whispered into the phone, her tone dripping with toxic satisfaction. "I got the cash and the gold. The old lady doesn't suspect a thing. She thinks that little brat Emma stole it."

A man's rough voice answered through the speaker. "Did they call the cops?"

"Are you kidding?" Lauren laughed quietly, a disgusting, vicious sound. "My mother shaved the kid's head and locked her out on the balcony to teach her a lesson. Clara took the kid and ran out crying like a pathetic loser. They're so focused on hating Clara and her daughter that nobody's even looking at me."

"Good," the man said. "The bookie wants the fifty grand by tomorrow night, Lauren. If you don't pay off your gambling debt, he's coming to your parents' house."

"I have enough here to cover thirty grand," Lauren replied, zipping her purse shut. "I'll sell the bracelet to the fence in North Chicago tomorrow afternoon. Once Mark gets back from his trip, I'll convince Mom to sue Clara for child neglect. That will keep Clara busy in court so she doesn't ask about her stolen jewelry."

Maya turned to look at me, her eyes burning with pure rage. "Clara, this is attempted destruction of a child's life to cover a gambling debt! We need to go to the police right now!"

"No," I said quietly, my voice dropping into an icy, steady calm that surprised even myself. "If I go to the police tonight, Lauren's lawyer will post bail, Margaret will lie to protect her daughter, and Mark will try to sweep this under the rug to protect his family's reputation."

"So what are you going to do?"

I looked down at the tablet screen. Lauren had turned off the lamp and was walking back toward her bedroom, completely unaware that her entire confession had been recorded, saved, and backed up onto three separate secure cloud drives.

"Mark lands at O'Hare airport tomorrow at nine in the morning," I said softly, a dark smile touching my lips. "He called his mother earlier saying he wants the whole family—including me and Emma—to gather at Margaret's house for Sunday brunch so he can celebrate his promotion."

I touched my daughter's soft cheek as she slept peacefully on the bed beside us.

"We are going to give Mark and his family a brunch they will never forget."

The next morning arrived cold and clear.

At 8:00 AM, my phone began ringing incessantly.

Mark.

I let it ring four times before I finally picked up.

"Clara! Where the hell are you?!" Mark's angry voice boomed through the speaker. "I just landed at O'Hare. My mother called me crying her eyes out! She said you threw a insane tantrum, insulted my father, and kidnapped Emma in the middle of the night!"

I took a deep breath, holding back the urge to scream. "Mark—"

"Don't 'Mark' me!" he snapped cut off my voice. "My mother told me what Emma did! She stole my grandmother's gold bracelet, Clara! A three-year-old! That is a complete reflection of your parenting! My mother was just trying to teach her accountability!"

Accountability. He didn't even ask if his daughter was okay. He didn't ask why I left. He had taken his mother's side without a single question, just as he had done for the four years of our marriage.

"Mark," I said, keeping my voice utterly flat and emotionless. "Is your mother's bracelet still missing?"

"Of course it's missing!" Mark shouted over the airport noise. "My mother is distraught! Look, I'm taking an Uber straight to my parents' apartment. I expect you and Emma to be there in one hour. You are going to apologize to my mother, you are going to help search Emma's belongings for that bracelet, and we are going to fix this family dynamic today!"

I closed my eyes for a brief second.

"We will be there, Mark," I said softly. "In one hour."

I hung up the phone.

Maya walked out of the kitchen, holding a warm cup of coffee. She looked at me with deep concern. "Are you ready for this, Clara?"

May you like

I turned to look in the mirror. I hadn't slept a wink, but my eyes were bright and clear. I wore a tailored black blazer, dark jeans, and boots. Beside me stood Emma, wearing a cute pink knit hat that completely covered her shaved head, holding her small plush bear.

"I've been playing the quiet, obedient daughter-in-law for four years, Maya," I said, taking my tablet and slipping it into my leather briefcase. "It's time to show the Dawsons who I really am."
