Chapter 6: A True Home

Six months later.
The summer sun was setting over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and violet. On the sprawling back lawn of the Vance estate, a soft breeze rustled through the white roses that lined the stone patio.
I sat on a comfortable outdoor sofa, a glass of iced tea in my hand, watching the most beautiful sight in the world.
Matteo was sitting on a blanket in the grass, his expensive suit jacket discarded on the lawn, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his scarred forearms. In his lap sat six-month-old Lily. She had grown beautifully, her cheeks chubby, her dark eyes wide and full of life. She let out a loud, bubbling shriek of laughter as Matteo gently ticked her stomach with a plush bear.
"She’s getting too fast for you, Vance," I called out, a genuine, radiant smile lighting up my face.
Matteo looked up, his rugged, dangerous features completely softening as he looked at me. The past six months had been a journey of absolute healing. Derek had been fired from his firm, blacklisted from every logistics company in the country, and Brittany had scrubbed her social media accounts entirely after a multi-million dollar defamation lawsuit filed by Matteo’s legal team stripped them of their savings.
But none of that mattered to us anymore. The shadows of the past had been completely burned away by the light of a new beginning.
Matteo stood up, easily lifting Lily into his arms, and walked over to the patio. He sat down next to me, settling Lily between us. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his thumb lingering against my cheek.
"She's not too fast for me," Matteo murmured, his silver eyes dark with a deep, enduring affection. "I’ve spent my whole life running from things, Emma. But since the day I met you and Lily in that hallway... I’ve finally found something worth staying still for."

He leaned in, his lips meeting mine in a slow, sweet kiss that carried the weight of a thousand promises. Lily reached up her tiny hand, her fingers catching the fabric of Matteo's shirt, linking us together.
The space on her birth certificate was no longer a blank line of rejection. It was a testament to the man who had looked at a broken world and decided to build a kingdom of love, loyalty, and protection around us—a kingdom that would never fall.
