Chapter 1: The Sovereign Shift

The stranger did not flinch at my question. His gaze remained locked onto mine, unyielding and heavier than the silence stretching across the sterile hospital hallway.
"The kind of man who pays his debts, and the kind of man who does not allow an innocent child to be treated like an option," he said. His voice was a velvety baritone that carried a subtle, lethal authority.
He stepped closer, and the sheer gravity of his presence made the hum of the fluorescent lights seem to fade. Up close, I could smell the faint scent of rain, cedarwood, and the untouchable aroma of immense wealth.
"My name is Matteo Vance," he said, extending a hand that was smooth but carried faint scars across the knuckles. "And whether your ex-fiancé likes it or not, your daughter is about to become a very important person in this city."
Before I could wrap my postpartum, exhausted brain around what he was saying, the head nurse hurried over, her face pale. "Mr. Vance, your brother's paperwork has been cleared in the west wing. We didn't expect you on the maternity floor."
Matteo didn't look at her. His eyes stayed on me. "I came to clear my head. And I found something that requires my attention."
He turned his gaze to the nursery glass, looking at my daughter. For a man whose face looked like it had been carved from marble and violence, his expression softened just a fraction as he watched her tiny hand twitch against the pink blanket.
"What is her name?" Matteo asked softly.
"Lily," I whispered, my voice trembling as the pain in my stomach flared. "I wanted to name her Lily."
"A beautiful name," Matteo murmured. He turned back to the terrified nurse. "Bring me the birth certificate paperwork for Lily. Now."

The nurse blinked, her hands shaking as she clutched her clipboard. "Sir? But... the biological father just refused to sign, and legally we need—"
"I am aware of what you legally need," Matteo interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, ringing with an icy finality that brooked no argument. "I am signing it. I am claiming her. From this day forward, Lily belongs to the Vance lineage. Put my name in the blank space."
