Chapter 6 - THE VOWS WE KEEP

One year later.

The golden afternoon sun of early autumn painted the sprawling gardens of our private estate in the Hamptons in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and crimson. The gentle sound of ocean waves lapping against the nearby shore provided a peaceful backdrop to the gathering of our closest friends, family, and loved ones.

Soft violin music floated through the air.

At the front of the floral archway, decorated with hundreds of white orchids and pastel roses, I stood wearing a dark blue bespoke tuxedo. Standing beside me as my best man was Marcus, wearing a rare smile.

The music shifted into a majestic, beautiful processional.

Every guest stood up, turning toward the garden path.

First came little Willa, now a gorgeous thirteen-month-old toddler with dark curls and bright, curious green eyes. She was wearing a tiny white lace dress, toddling happily down the aisle holding the hand of her nanny, tossing flower petals onto the grass with wild delight. The guests let out collective awws at how adorable she was.

And then, my breath caught in my throat.

Walking down the aisle on the arm of a close family friend was Sloan.

She took my breath away so completely that for a moment, I forgot how to speak. She wore an exquisite, off-the-shoulder silk gowne with a long cathedral veil that caught the autumn breeze. She looked like an angel—radiant, powerful, and breathtakingly happy. Her green eyes were fixed entirely on me, shining with tears of joy.

When she reached the altar, I stepped forward, taking her soft, delicate hands in mine.

"You are the most breathtaking woman in the universe," I whispered, leaning in so only she could hear.

Sloan flushed softly, her radiant smile melting my heart. "You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Blackwood."

The minister began the ceremony, speaking of resilience, second chances, and the unbreakable bond of true love that withstands the fiercest storms.

When it came time for our vows, I turned fully toward Sloan, holding both her hands tightly in mine. I didn't look at a piece of paper; I spoke straight from my soul.

"Sloan," I began, my voice rich with deep, undeniable emotion. "Eighteen months ago, I was a man who thought success was measured in stock prices, boardrooms, and billion-dollar victories. I thought love was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. I was wrong. The day I walked into my penthouse and saw you holding our daughter, my life truly began."

Sloan wiped a tear from her cheek, smiling through her tears.

"I promise to honor you, to fight for you, and to love you with every beat of my heart," I continued. "I promise to never run when things get tough, to never let fear stand between us, and to spend every single day of my life making sure you and Willa know how deeply you are cherished. You are my home, Sloan. And I am never leaving home again."

The guests wiped tears from their eyes.

Sloan squeezed my hands, her voice soft yet firm with absolute certainty as she spoke her vows.

"Vincent," she said, looking straight into my eyes. "Six months ago, I thought I had lost you forever. But you showed me that true strength isn't never failing—it's having the courage to come back and fight for what matters most. You saved our daughter, you protected our family, and you proved that your love is an impenetrable shield. I give you my heart, my life, and my forever. I am proud to be your wife."

"By the power vested in me," the minister declared with a beaming smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife again! Vincent, you may kiss your bride!"

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

I stepped forward, wrapped my arms around Sloan’s waist, lifted her slightly off her feet, and pulled her into a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss. The crowd erupted into thunderous cheers and applause.

When I set her down, little Willa came running up to us, her tiny arms raised. "Daddy! Mommy!"

I laughed, scooping our daughter up into my right arm while wrapping my left arm firmly around Sloan’s waist.

Together, the three of us stood under the golden sunshine, surrounded by the applause of our loved ones, looking out toward a future filled with endless light, security, and boundless love.

We had survived the cold, the secrets, and the storms. And as I looked at my wife and daughter, I knew with absolute certainty that our story was just beginning—and it was going to be a happy ever after.
