Chapter 2 - THE AMBUSH AT VANGUARD

By 1:00 PM, my bulletproof Maybach pulled up to the glass-and-steel headquarters of Vanguard Bio-Tech in Midtown Manhattan. Rain was beginning to slick the pavement, matching the dark, storm-cloud intensity inside my chest.

In the back seat, Sloan held Willa, who was finally sleeping peacefully after receiving a temporary stabilizing shot from a private nurse I had hired to accompany us. Sloan looked at me nervously as three of my private security detail stepped out of the escort vehicle behind us.

"Vincent, Julian has armed security in that building," Sloan warned, her voice trembling. "He knows how dangerous you are. He won't hesitate to call the police and claim you're trespassing."

"Let him call them," I said coldly, adjusting the cuffs of my bespoke suit. "By the time the police arrive, Julian will be signing the release forms for Willa’s medicine, or he’ll be bankrupt."

I turned to look at Sloan. Despite her exhaustion, her green eyes held a fierce light. Reaching across the leather seat, I took her hand in mine, lacing our fingers together.

"Trust me, Sloan. Please," I murmured, staring deeply into her eyes. "I failed you six months ago when I let you walk away. I failed to see how much you were hurting. I am not failing you or our daughter today."

Sloan looked down at our joined hands, a soft, trembling breath escaping her lips. "I trust you, Vincent. Just... bring us home safe."

Leaving Sloan and Willa in the armored vehicle under the guard of four armed men, I strode into the towering marble lobby of Vanguard Bio-Tech, flanked by my head of security, Marcus.

The lobby security guards immediately stood up, recognizing my face instantly from every financial cover magazine in North America. "Mr. Blackwood! You don't have an appointment—"

"Get out of my way," I said, my voice cutting through the space like a razor.

Marcus stepped forward, physically blocking the guard who tried to reach for his radio, while I bypassed the turnstiles and pushed straight into the executive elevator, punching the button for the 40th-floor penthouse suite.

When the elevator doors chimed open on the top floor, Julian Vance was standing by a floor-to-ceiling window, holding a glass of amber scotch. He was fifty years old, with slicked-back gray hair, wearing an expensive Italian suit. He turned around, a smug, villainous smile spreading across his sharp face.

"Vincent Blackwood," Julian purred, taking a slow sip of his drink. "I wondered how long it would take for Sloan to break and run to her big, powerful ex-husband. You're five hours early for the deadline."

I walked into his vast office, stopping ten feet away from his mahogany desk. I didn't smile. I didn't show an ounce of hesitation.

"You have five minutes to surrender the full dosage rights and manufacturing formulas for the Vanguard-9 medical therapy for Willa Blackwood," I said, my tone eerily calm.

Julian let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Or what, Vincent? You'll buy my company? Vanguard isn't listed on the public stock exchange. I own eighty percent of the voting shares. You can't touch me here. Your daughter’s life is in my hands. If you want her to survive her first year, you're going to sign over every asset in the Blackwood estate and apologize publicly for ruining my firm three years ago."

I reached into my inner jacket pocket. Julian’s eyes flicked down nervously, thinking I was reaching for a weapon.

Instead, I pulled out a black leather folder and tossed it onto his desk with a heavy thud.

"Open it," I commanded softly.

Julian frowned, setting his scotch down. He flipped open the folder. As his eyes scanned the first page, the smug, arrogant smile on his face slowly evaporated, replaced by a sickly, gray paleness.

"What... what is this?" Julian stuttered, his fingers beginning to shake.

"That is the paper trail showing that your clinical trials for Vanguard-9 were funded using illegal offshore accounts linked to human trafficking syndicates in Eastern Europe," I replied smoothly, taking a seat in the leather chair across from him and crossing my legs. "It also includes audio recordings of your head doctor admitting that you intentionally withheld the therapy from my daughter to force an extortion agreement."

Julian slammed his hands on the desk. "This is bluffing! It’s inadmissible in court!"

"I don't care about court, Julian," I leaned forward, my dark eyes boring into his soul. "Twenty minutes ago, my legal team transmitted those exact files to the FDA, the Department of Justice, and the Wall Street Journal. At 2:00 PM, the federal government will freeze every bank account attached to your name. By 3:00 PM, your board will remove you as CEO. And by 4:00 PM, you will be in handcuffs."

Julian collapsed back into his leather chair, gasping for air as if he were drowning.

"However," I continued, leaning back, "I am willing to make a trade."

"What... what trade?" Julian gasped.

"Sign the immediate, unconditional global patent transfer of the Vanguard-9 therapy over to the Blackwood Medical Foundation. Ensure my daughter receives her first dose within the hour. Do that, and I give your legal team a twelve-hour head start before the DOJ executes the arrest warrant."

Julian looked at the folder, then looked at me. He realized, with absolute clarity, that he was playing against a man who had already won the war before even stepping into the room.

With shaking, desperate hands, Julian grabbed a pen and signed the transfer authorization documents.

I picked up the signed papers, stood up, and looked down at the ruined man sitting behind his desk.

"Never threaten my family again," I whispered.
