Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Queen

The courtroom was suffocatingly tense.

Evelyn sat at the defendant's table, wearing a tailored navy suit, looking bored and inconvenienced. Taylor sat behind her in the gallery, wringing her hands, looking pale and exhausted. They still didn't know about the hard drive. During discovery, Sarah had managed to bury the video file deep within a massive dump of financial documents, waiting for the perfect moment to spring the trap.

Evelyn's lawyer, Richard, was pacing the floor, delivering a fiery opening statement about my "vindictive nature" and "manipulation of a vulnerable child."

When it was our turn, Sarah stood up. She didn't pace. She didn't shout. She simply walked to the AV cart, plugged in a flash drive, and turned to the judge.

"Your Honor, the defense claims that David Vance is a liar. They claim Evelyn Vance is a loving, devoted grandmother. I would like to submit Exhibit G—video and audio evidence recovered from the marital home's localized security server."

Evelyn’s head snapped up. Her bored expression vanished, replaced by a sudden, sharp panic. She turned to whisper frantically to Richard, who looked completely blindsided.

Sarah hit play on the large monitors facing the judge, the witness stand, and the gallery.

The courtroom was dead silent as the black-and-white footage of October 12th played. The sound of Lily’s desperate pleas—"No! Grandma, please! It's cold!"—echoed off the mahogany walls.

I didn't watch the screen. I watched Taylor.

As the video played, showing her mother throwing her daughter into a freezing box and sitting casually beside it, Taylor’s face crumpled. She let out a horrific, guttural gasp, covering her mouth with both hands as tears flooded her eyes. The illusion she had lived under her entire life—that her mother was strict but loving—shattered into a million irreparable pieces.

The judge’s face had turned to stone.

When the video ended, Sarah turned to Evelyn.

"Fourteen minutes, Your Honor," Sarah said quietly. "Fourteen minutes of torture. And we have timestamps for five other identical incidents over the past two months."

"Objection!" Richard scrambled, his voice cracking. "This footage was obtained illegally! We weren't notified!"

"It was subpoenaed from a server on property co-owned by my client, under a legal warrant," Sarah shot back. "It is completely admissible."

The judge slammed his gavel down so hard it echoed like a gunshot.

"Objection overruled," the judge bellowed, his eyes fixed on Evelyn with absolute disgust. "Bailiff, take Mrs. Evelyn Vance into custody immediately. I am revoking her bail pending a criminal trial for felony child abuse and endangerment."

Evelyn stood up, her mask of civility finally, completely destroyed. "You can't do this! I am Evelyn Vance! I own half this town! That child needed discipline! She is a spoiled, ungrateful—"

The bailiff grabbed her arms, forcing them behind her back, the sharp click of handcuffs cutting off her rant. As they dragged her down the center aisle, she looked at Taylor, expecting her daughter to defend her as she always did.

"Taylor! Tell them!" Evelyn shrieked. "Tell them I was just helping!"

Taylor stood up. She was trembling from head to toe, her face streaked with mascara. She looked at her mother not with fear, but with absolute revulsion.

"You're a monster," Taylor whispered, her voice carrying through the silent courtroom. "Don't ever speak to me again."

As the doors closed behind Evelyn, Taylor collapsed into the wooden pew, sobbing uncontrollably. The wicked queen of Aspen Ridge had fallen.
