Chapter 4 - The Digital Ghost

The police execution of the subpoena was swift and brutal.

I wasn't allowed on the property, but Sarah called me with live updates. Evelyn had tried to block the front door, screaming about illegal search and seizure, while Taylor stood in the background looking like a ghost. The police pushed past them, went straight to the basement, and retrieved the black server box exactly where I said it would be.

It took a digital forensics expert two days to crack the encryption I had set up years ago, and to bypass the password Taylor had recently changed.

On Thursday evening, I sat in the dim light of Sarah's conference room. The forensics expert, a young guy named Mateo, connected a laptop to the large television on the wall.

"I pulled the logs from the last six months," Mateo said, typing rapidly. "I filtered the timestamps for motion detection in the garage between the hours of 3 PM and 6 PM—the hours after Lily gets home from kindergarten, when Taylor is usually at her Pilates class and Evelyn is babysitting."

He hit play.

The black-and-white infrared footage flared to life. The timestamp read: October 12th, 4:15 PM. Two weeks before I found her.

On the screen, Evelyn dragged Lily by the arm into the garage. Lily was crying silently, her little face twisted in distress.

"Stop crying, you ungrateful little brat," Evelyn's voice echoed through the camera’s microphone, sharp and vicious. "Your mother might tolerate your whining, but I won't. You need to learn discipline."

Evelyn marched toward the freezer. She opened the heavy lid with one hand, grabbed Lily by the back of her shirt with the other, and practically threw her inside. Lily scrambled, trying to climb out, her tiny hands slipping on the plastic rim.

"No! Grandma, please! It's cold! I'm sorry!"

Evelyn slammed the lid down, nearly catching Lily’s fingers.

Then, Evelyn did something that chilled me to the bone. She didn't leave. She pulled up a folding lawn chair, sat down right next to the freezer, and casually pulled out her phone, scrolling through it while Lily’s muffled screams echoed from inside the metal box.

She left her in there for exactly fourteen minutes.

When she finally opened it, Lily was shivering so violently she couldn't stand. Evelyn yanked her out by the collar.

"If you tell your mother, I'll put you in there for an hour next time," Evelyn hissed, shaking her. "Do we have an understanding?"

Lily nodded frantically.

The video ended.

Silence filled the conference room. I was shaking, tears of absolute rage streaming down my face. Sarah, a hardened family lawyer who had seen the worst of humanity, looked physically nauseated.

"Print it," Sarah said, her voice shaking with barely contained fury. "Copy it to three different flash drives. I want this sent to the district attorney within the hour. We aren't just going for custody anymore, David. We are sending that monster to prison."
