Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary

Six months later.

The summer sun was shining brightly over the Hudson River, casting golden light across the sprawling, green lawns of Blackthorne House.

The iron gates were still there, the armed security guards still walked the perimeter, but the heavy, dark air of fear that had hung over the estate for years was completely gone.

On the grand stone patio overlooking the water, seven-year-old Caleb was running through the grass, laughing hysterically as he chased a golden retriever puppy across the lawn.

"Slow down, Caleb!" Mrs. Bell called out from the patio kitchen, holding a tray of fresh lemonade. "You'll trip over your own shoes!"

I stood near the stone balustrade, wearing a light white summer dress that blew gently in the warm breeze. The scars on my shoulder and ribs no longer ached. The shadows of my past were gone—The Obsidian Network had completely collapsed following Gideon’s death and the exposure of their global ledgers to international law enforcement.

I was free.

A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. Dominic rested his chin on my shoulder, pulling me back against his broad chest.

"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Mercer?" Dominic murmured softly into my ear, his lips brushing my skin.

I smiled, turning slightly in his arms to look up into his dark, handsome face.

Three months ago, in a quiet, private ceremony in the estate's glass conservatory, Dominic and I had been married. There were no syndicate bosses, no business press, no fake smiles—just us, Caleb, Pastor Thomas, and the open sky.

"I was thinking about the day I arrived here with one suitcase," I whispered, reaching up to trace the line of his jaw. "I thought I was coming here to hide in the dark."

"And instead, you saved my boy," Dominic said softly, his dark eyes filled with endless warmth and devotion. "And you gave this house a soul."

"Dad! Mara! Come look!" Caleb shouted from the lawn, holding up a bright red frisbee. "Bobby caught it in the air!"

Dominic chuckled, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my lips before taking my hand in his.

"Shall we go join our son, my love?" Dominic asked.

I looked out at the sunlit lawn, at the little boy waving at us, and at the strong, protective man holding my hand.

"Yes," I smiled, stepping down the stone stairs into the warm sunlight. "Let's go home."
