Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Shadows

The smell of copper and spilled French champagne was suffocating.
The white marble floor of the Blackthorne House ballroom was slick with my blood. Every ragged breath I drew felt like broken glass dragging through my lungs. Beneath my trembling body, six-year-old Caleb Mercer was sobbing, his small fingers clutching the soaked fabric of my gray maid’s apron.
"Don't look, Caleb," I choked out, a warm trickle of crimson spilling over my lower lip. "Close your eyes, baby... just keep them closed..."
"MAKER!"
Dominic Mercer’s voice didn't sound like the cold, calculating billionaire who ruled New York’s underworld from the shadows. It sounded like a wounded animal. He crashed to his knees beside us, completely ignoring the shattered glass cutting through his tailored tuxedo trousers. His large, calloused hands—hands that had ordered the execution of rival syndicate leaders—were shaking uncontrollably as he pressed them against the burning entry wounds in my side.
"Stay with me, Mara!" Dominic roared, his dark eyes wide with an emotion no one in this city had ever seen on his face: absolute, unadulterated terror. "Look at me! You saved my son. You do not get to die in this house!"
"Dad! Dad, she protected me!" Caleb wailed, his face buried in my neck. "The bad man tried to shoot me and Mara jumped!"
"I know, son, I know," Dominic rasped, his voice cracking. He scooped me up into his arms, lifting my limp body as if I weighed nothing. His expensive white shirt was instantly dyed crimson against my crushed ribs. "Call the private trauma team! Lock down the gates! Nobody leaves this estate alive!"
The ballroom was absolute chaos. Security guards in black suits were tackling guests, women in diamond necklaces were shrieking, and the caterer who had pulled the trigger lay dead five yards away, three bullet holes in his chest courtesy of Dominic’s personal bodyguard.
Dominic turned toward the private elevator, carrying me close to his chest. My vision was fading fast, dark static creeping in from the edges of my sight.
Then, a voice cut through the screaming crowd.
It wasn't loud. It wasn't a shout. It was a smooth, cultured whisper spoken into a satellite phone twenty feet away, but to my trained ears, it sounded like a thunderclap.
"Target down. Seraphina Vance has been neutralized."
My eyes snapped wide open. The world stopped spinning. The pain in my shoulder and ribs instantly vanished beneath a wave of pure, paralyzing horror.
Seraphina Vance.
Not Mara Ellis. Not the quiet maid who cleaned the east wing and read bedtime stories to a lonely six-year-old.
I forced my head to turn slightly over Dominic’s shoulder, looking back across the blood-splattered ballroom.
Standing near the shattered floor-to-ceiling glass doors was a man wearing a silver waiter’s jacket. He had sharp, angular cheekbones, cold steel-blue eyes, and a thin, jagged scar running from his left temple down to his jawline.
Gideon Vance.
My heart plummeted into a black abyss. Eight years ago, I had watched Gideon’s coffin descend into the frozen earth of a private cemetery in Zurich. I had spent eight years running from the global intelligence syndicate known as The Obsidian Network—the elite assassination squad my family had run for generations. I had faked my death, burned my fingerprints with acid, and buried my past under three layers of false identities.
Gideon hadn't died in Switzerland.
And as he caught me staring at him, his thin lips curved into a cold, cruel smile. He tapped two fingers against his temple—our family’s old signal for 'I found you'—and slipped silently out into the rainy night.
The gunman hadn't come to kill Caleb Mercer.
The gunman had come to execute me. And I had thrown myself into the bullets, thinking I was saving an innocent child.
"Mara! Keep your eyes open!" Dominic pleaded, his frantic voice echoing as the elevator doors slammed shut, plunging us into darkness. "Stay with me!"

I looked up at Dominic’s terrified, desperate face, my vision finally blacking out.
I lied to you, Dominic, I thought as darkness claimed me. I’m not a harmless maid. I’m the most dangerous weapon in Europe... and I brought the monster right into your home.
