Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Setup

The heavy oak door of Damiano Moretti’s private office closed with a soft, ominous click. In the corridor outside, the sudden shift in atmosphere was terrifying. Armed sentries in bespoke charcoal suits materialized from the shadows, sweeping the perimeter with practiced efficiency. No boots scraped against the marble floor; no voices carried down the hall.

Sophia’s hands were shaking so violently that the champagne glasses on the silver tray rattled against one another, threatening to shatter. She scooped up her six-year-old daughter, Emma, burying her face into the little girl’s shoulder, terrified that the invisible men with guns might suddenly decide witnesses were liabilities.

“You did a very brave thing, sweetheart,” Sophia whispered fiercely into Emma’s hair as she rushed down the hallway toward the west parlor, her heart hammering against her ribs. “And you did a very scary thing. Why didn’t you stay in the staff room like Mommy told you?”

“The lady with the sharp shoes told me to find the tall man with the dark coat,” Emma whispered back, clutching her worn rag doll tight against her chest. “She said he lost his shiny button.”

Sophia stopped dead in her tracks. The corridor felt drafty, a chilling draft carrying the scent of impending catastrophe. The lady with the sharp shoes. That could only mean one person: Beatrice Vance, the chief legal counsel and financial architect for the Moretti syndicate—and the woman currently dating Damiano’s second-in-command, Victor Vance.

Sophia reached the west parlor, shoved the heavy door open, stepped inside with Emma, and slammed it shut. She threw the brass deadbolt into place, listening to the heavy thunk of the lock engaging.

She set Emma down on a velvet settee, dropping to her knees in front of her.

“Emma, listen to me very carefully,” Sophia said, her voice tight with panic. “Did Beatrice see you when you saw the man with the sad eyes placing that thing under the desk?”

Emma nodded solemnly. “She was standing right by the pillar. She looked at me, and then she smiled, but it wasn't a nice smile. It was the kind of smile my teacher makes before she gives everyone a pop quiz.”

A cold dread pooled in Sophia’s stomach. Beatrice Vance was not just a lawyer; she was fiercely ambitious, calculating, and ruthless. If Beatrice was involved in planting an explosive device inside Damiano Moretti’s private office minutes before a historic, high-stakes peace summit with the four other most feared Mafia families on the East Coast, it meant a coup was underway.

A coup orchestrated from within.

If Damiano Moretti died tonight along with the heads of the Gambino, Lucchese, Genovese, and Bonanno syndicates, total war would erupt across New York. And in the ensuing chaos, who would take control? Victor Vance and his faction.

And where would that leave Sophia and Emma?

Disposable. Loose ends in a game of blood and high finance.

Sophia paced across the room, her mind racing. They couldn't stay in the parlor. The moment Damiano finished dismantling the bomb—if he even survived opening the desk—the traitors would realize someone had tipped him off. They would trace the warning back to the cleaning staff. Back to her. Back to Emma.

“Emma,” Sophia said, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper as she grabbed her heavy coat from the back of the chair. “We need to leave. Right now.”

Before she could reach the door, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the hallway outside.

Someone was trying the handle.
