Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Lies

Eleanor’s face shifted from arrogant certainty to absolute stillness. "What did you say?"
"For two years, Derek has been forcing me to fund Suzanne’s 'lifestyle' through my private consulting firm," I said, leaning back in my chair, ignoring the throbbing pain in my cheek. "He thought he was just being a good brother. But as a certified forensic accountant, I kept receipts. Suzanne hasn't been paying taxes on those thousands of dollars, Eleanor. She’s been laundering them through your political action committee as 'anonymous campaign donations' to avoid federal oversight."

"You... you ruined us," she whispered, her voice losing its aristocratic edge entirely. "You were our family."
"No," I said, standing up slowly, forcing her to look up at the burns she had told me to hide. "I was your bank account. But the account is officially closed."
Before she could utter another threat, the door to my apartment cracked open. The detective from the night before stepped into the room, accompanied by two federal agents in sharp suits.

"Eleanor Mercer?" the lead agent asked, producing an official federal warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, tax evasion, and campaign finance violations. Please place your hands behind your back."
As the handcuffs clicked around the councilwoman's wrists, the great matriarch of the Mercer family was led out into the hallway, sobbing silently as the neighbors watched through their peepholes. The weapon they had used to keep me compliant for years had just turned its blades upon them.
