Chapter 1 - The Shattered Weapon

The silence that followed the click of the front door was absolute.

From my hiding spot inside the master bedroom closet—the heavy wooden door cracked open just half an inch—I watched Derek step into the foyer. He was still wearing his tailored charcoal suit, his perfect smile radiating the effortless arrogance that had fooled everyone I knew. Suzanne walked in behind him, chewing gum loudly, her designer sunglasses pushed up into her bleached-blonde hair. She was already holding an empty shopping tote, ready to fill it with my life.

"Clara!" Derek called out, his voice booming with the calm, terrifying authority he always used after a 'correction.' "We’re home. Suzanne needs to catch a flight to Miami by nine, so let's get that card sorted out."

Suzanne giggled, tossing her keys onto the entryway table. "And tell her I want that vintage Chanel bag from her closet, Derek. She never wears it anyway."

They walked into the dining room.

The laughter died instantly.

Derek stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes scanning the completely bare room. The expensive silver candlesticks I had inherited from my aunt were gone. The hand-woven rug was missing. The built-in shelving, once filled with my rare book collection, held nothing but dust motes dancing in the evening sun.

But his gaze didn't stay on the emptiness. It locked onto the center of the dark mahogany dining table.

Sitting side by side on the polished wood were two items: my platinum wedding band, and the crisp, white pages of the Atlanta Police Department domestic battery report, stamped in bright red ink: CRIMINAL INJUNCTION ISSUED.

"What the hell is this?" Derek muttered, his voice dropping into a harsh, jagged register. He marched over to the table, snatching up the police report. As his eyes scanned the text—the detailed medical descriptions of the second-degree burns on my neck, the digital photographs attached to the file, and the felony warrant bearing his name—the blood completely drained from his face.

"Derek..." Suzanne whimpered, her arrogant posture instantly collapsing as she looked around the hollow apartment. "Where is her stuff? Where is the card?"

"She went to the cops," Derek whispered, his knuckles turning white as he crumpled the pages in his fist. His jaw clenched so hard a vein throbed violently near his temple. "The stupid bitch actually went to the cops."

He whipped out his phone, his fingers flying across the screen as he dialed my number.

Inside the dark closet, my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. The ice pack pressed against my blistering cheek was melting, cold water dripping down my collar, but I didn't dare move. I had known he would call. I had prepared for it.

On the third ring, Derek’s phone didn't connect to my voicemail. Instead, the heavy double doors of the apartment foyer violently swung open.

Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a detective in a sharp civilian suit, stepped into the room.

"Derek Mercer?" the detective asked, his voice cutting through the silent apartment like a razor. "Hands where we can see them. You are under arrest for felony domestic battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."
