Chapter 5 - The Price of Loyalty

The storm outside had cleared by midnight, leaving a quiet, starry sky glowing over the New York harbor.
Inside the master suite, Lily had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep. Her small breathing was steady and calm, her hand still holding tight to Claire’s thumb even in her dreams.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed, feeling the weight of the last few hours crashing down on her. Her body ached, her sweater was stained with porridge, and her mind was spinning. She had come here expecting a temporary babysitting job to pay her mother’s medical bills; she had ended up uncovering a assassination plot within the Italian mob.
The door creaked open, and Gabriel stepped back into the room.
He had changed into a plain black sweater. The gun was gone, and the terrifying mob boss facade had softened, leaving only a man who looked utterly exhausted.
He walked over to the bed, pulled a chair up, and sat down across from Claire. For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
"Moretti’s men are being picked up by police as we speak," Gabriel said softly, his gray eyes resting on his sleeping daughter. "Victoria confessed everything within twenty minutes of talking to my lawyers. She was paid two million dollars by Moretti to orchestrate the hit on my car four months ago."
Claire swallowed hard. "And... Lily?"
"Lily saw Victoria hand over the keycard to my garage," Gabriel whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "She was four years old, holding her mother’s hand in the back seat, carrying a secret that was killing her from the inside out. She thought if she ate, if she spoke, the bad men would come back."
He looked up, meeting Claire’s eyes.
"You saved her life, Claire," Gabriel said. "Not the doctors. Not the psychologists. You."
Claire looked down at Lily’s small hand wrapped around her thumb. "She just needed to feel safe, Mr. Varrick. Children don't care about money or big houses. They just need to know someone is standing between them and the dark."
Gabriel pulled an envelope from his pocket and set it gently on the nightstand beside Claire.
"Seventy-five thousand dollars," Gabriel said. "As agreed."
Claire stared at the envelope. It was the exact amount she needed to clear her mother’s hospital debt and pay for the next six months of chemotherapy. Her eyes welled with tears. "Thank you. You have no idea what this means to my family."
"I think I do," Gabriel replied quietly. He stood up, walking toward the large glass window overlooking the glittering city. "That money pays for your work over the last week. But it doesn't pay for what you gave my daughter."
Claire stood up slowly, slipping her hand out of Lily’s gentle grip. "My job is done, Mr. Varrick. She’s eating now. She knows she’s safe."
Gabriel turned around, looking at her with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.
"Your job as a temporary nanny is done," Gabriel said, his voice firm and steady. "But I’m offering you a new position. Head of Lily’s personal care, full-time. Five hundred thousand dollars a year. Housing for you and your mother at my private estate in Upstate New York, complete with full medical coverage from the best oncology specialists in the country."
May you like
Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Mr. Varrick... that’s... I can't accept that."
"You can, and you will," Gabriel said, stepping closer until he was standing right in front of her. "My daughter chose you, Claire. In a world full of people who wanted something from me, you were the only one who cared about her. I don't trust anyone else with her life."
