Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Dark

Within three days, the miracle everyone had given up on began to unfold.
Lily was eating. Not much, but enough to pull her out of the red zone. The IV lines were removed, the heart monitor was packed away, and the little girl who had been sliding into death was now sitting on the plush rug, holding a stuffed dog while Claire read her a storybook.
Gabriel spent hours standing in the doorway, silent as a ghost. For four years, he had controlled every variable in his empire, yet he couldn't break through his daughter's trauma. Watching this broke, ordinary twenty-five-year-old girl from Queens do what millions of dollars couldn't made something shift deep inside his cold chest.
On the fifth night, rain poured over Manhattan once again.
Lily had fallen asleep, her tiny hand tucked securely inside Claire’s palm. Claire was sitting on the floor, leaning her head against the side of the bed, exhausted but relieved.
The bedroom door opened quietly. Victoria stepped inside, wearing her silk robe, carrying a warm glass of milk on a silver tray.
"You've done well, Claire," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she set the tray on the nightstand. "Gabriel is very pleased. In fact, he’s down in his study writing your seventy-five-thousand-dollar check right now."
"Thank you, Ms. Vance," Claire whispered, trying not to wake the child. "She’s recovering quickly. Her fever is completely gone."
"Yes, well, now that she’s stable, your job here is done," Victoria said, her green eyes flashing with a cold, sharp light. "You can take your check and leave tonight."
Claire frowned, looking up at Victoria. "Tonight? But Mr. Varrick hired me for the month. Lily is still fragile. She panics whenever unfamiliar people enter the room."
"I am her stepmother-to-be!" Victoria snapped, dropping her quiet tone. "I don't need a cheap substitute teacher hovering around my husband and my stepdaughter, making me look useless! Drink the tea I brought you, pack your things, and get out."
Claire looked down at the silver tray. Something about Victoria’s sudden urgency felt wrong. Very wrong.
Before Claire could answer, Lily stirred in her sleep. The little girl gasped, kicking her feet beneath the blanket, her face twisting into a nightmare.
"No... no..." Lily whimpered, her tiny hands clutching her plush dog.
Claire instantly leaned over her, smoothing her damp curls. "It’s okay, Lilybug. I’m here. Claire is here."
Lily opened her eyes, her pupils wide with terror. But she wasn't looking at the monsters in her dream. Her gaze snapped straight to Victoria, who was standing beside the nightstand.
Lily began to shake violently. She grabbed Claire’s sweater, hiding her face in Claire’s lap, sobbing uncontrollably.
"What is wrong with her?" Victoria said, taking a step backward, her face tight. "She’s acting crazy again!"
"She's not crazy, she's terrified," Claire said, wrapping her arms around the trembling child. She leaned down to Lily’s ear. "What is it, sweetie? What are you afraid of?"

Lily pulled back just enough to point one tiny, trembling finger at Victoria’s pristine white silk dress.
"The white lady..." Lily sobbed, her voice ringing clear through the quiet bedroom. "She gave the shiny keys to the bad man with the scar. She said... she said 'Take the girl, but make sure Gabriel dies in the car.'"
