Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW ON THE PIER

The news of Gabriel Moretti’s engagement to Emma Brooks dominated the headlines of the underground world for two weeks.

To the public, she was an inspiring pediatric advocate who had taken over Vance Medical Logistics and transformed it into a non-profit powerhouse. To the Moretti empire, she was their protected sovereign—a woman whose gentle heart had tamed the most dangerous man in the nation.

However, hatred dies hard in the shadows.

In a secluded warehouse on the damp docks of Staten Island, Marcus Vance sat across a steel table from Victoria DeLuca.

Marcus looked disheveled and desperate. After being fired by Emma and stripped of his corporate access, his lifestyle had collapsed. His luxury car had been repossessed, his high-society friends had abandoned him, and he was facing years of back-tax audits initiated by Emma’s financial team.

Victoria DeLuca was equally consumed by bitterness. Her family had been humiliated at the plaza, forced to sign over fifty million dollars in port assets to Gabriel before fleeing to Chicago.

“Gabriel is distracted,” Victoria said, sipping whiskey from a glass. “He’s so obsessed with that fat former servant that he’s reduced his personal security detail when he visits her mother’s hospital.”

Marcus leaned forward, his eyes wild with malice. “Emma ruined my life. She thinks she’s untouchable now just because she’s wearing Moretti diamonds. If we take her down, the whole Moretti empire stumbles.”

“We don't take her down,” Victoria corrected with a cold, sinister smile. “We take the children.”

Marcus blinked. “The twins?”

“Today is Lily’s final progress checkup at the pediatric clinic near Central Park,” Victoria revealed, sliding an architectural blueprint across the table. “Gabriel’s lead enforcer, Marco, will be guarding the front entrance. But the rear medical loading dock is vulnerable.”

“What’s the plan?” Marcus asked, a dark grin spreading across his face.

“We snatch the girl,” Victoria declared coldly. “We demand the immediate return of the DeLuca shipping ports and fifty million in cash. And when Gabriel arrives at the drop point... we kill them both.”

Two hours later, the afternoon sun was shining brightly outside the Manhattan Pediatric Therapy Center.

Inside a private sunlit room on the ground floor, Lily was showing off for her doctor. She ran across the padded floor, jumping over a small foam obstacle with a burst of delighted laughter.

“She’s completely healed, Miss Brooks,” the head surgeon said, looking at Emma with genuine admiration. “The nerve damage has stabilized entirely. It’s a medical miracle.”

Emma smiled warmly, kneeling to tie Lily’s pink sneaker. “She did all the hard work doctor. She’s a fighter.”

Suddenly, the lights in the clinic flickered once, twice, and went completely black!

The emergency red backup lights hummed to life, casting a sinister glow across the hallway.

Outside the room, the heavy thud of a suppressed firearm echoed through the drywall, followed by the sound of a body hitting the floor!

Emma’s heart leaped into her throat. She instantly pulled Lily behind her, backing toward the far corner of the exam room.

“Lily, stay behind me! Don't make a sound!” Emma whispered urgently.

The door was kicked open with violent force!

Two men in black ski masks rushed into the room, carrying heavy stun batons and zip-ties. Behind them walked Marcus Vance, holding a silenced pistol, a grotesque, triumphant smile plastered across his face.

“Hello, Emma,” Marcus sneered, aiming the gun directly at her chest. “Look at you now. Playing dress-up in silk while your bodyguard bleeds out in the hallway.”

Emma’s eyes widened in horror. “Marcus?! Are you insane?! If Gabriel finds out you’re here, he will skin you alive!”

“Gabriel isn't coming,” Marcus laughed maniacally. “The cell jammer is active within a five-block radius. No signals go in or out. Grab the kid!”

One of the masked men lunged forward to grab Lily—

SMASH!

Emma didn't hesitate for a single microsecond. She grabbed a heavy steel medical tray loaded with surgical instruments and smashed it squarely across the masked man’s face!

Noses cracked! Blood sprayed! The man went down, howling in pain!

“You crazy bitch!” the second man screamed, lunging at Emma with his stun baton.

Emma ducked her heavy frame low, using her size and weight to drive her shoulder straight into the man’s stomach, slamming him hard into the glass medicine cabinet!

Glass shattered in a deafening roar!

Marcus screamed in frustration, aiming his gun at Emma’s leg. “STAND STILL, YOU BITCH!”

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, Lily sprinted forward from behind Emma. Using the strength she had built over months of painful therapy, the little girl leaped forward and bit Marcus’s gun hand with all her strength!

“AAAGH! GET OFF ME!” Marcus yelled, swinging his arm wild to throw the child off—

BOOM!

The heavy reinforced wall of the exam room exploded inward in a shower of concrete, dust, and steel girders!

A massive black tactical armored truck had literally driven straight through the exterior brick wall of the building, crushing the exam table into splinters!

Through the dust cloud, a figure stepped down from the truck’s reinforced bumper.

It was Gabriel.

He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He was clad in full heavy tactical body armor, carrying a massive shotgun, his face covered in soot and absolute, apocalyptic vengeance.

Behind him, thirty Moretti tactical operators swarmed through the breach, their laser sights painting Marcus and the surviving mercenary within half a second!

Gabriel didn't even raise his gun.

He walked through the dust cloud like an angry god of war. He grabbed Marcus’s gun-hand, squeezing until the bones in Marcus’s wrist shattered into fine powder with a horrific CRUNCH!

Marcus let out an ear-splitting shriek of agonizing pain, dropping the pistol as he collapsed to his knees!

Gabriel grabbed Marcus by the hair, dragging his face up until their eyes met.

“Did you really think a cell jammer could stop me?” Gabriel whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, unholy dark humor. “Every piece of jewelry Emma wears has a satellite tracking beacon wired directly into my heart monitor.”

Gabriel looked over Marcus’s shoulder and saw Emma holding Lily tight in the corner, both of them safe, unhurt, and looking at him with absolute trust.

Gabriel turned back to Marcus, his eyes cold as ice.

“Marco,” Gabriel commanded smoothly.

His chief enforcer stepped forward through the dust, wiping blood from a minor scalp graze. “Yes, Boss?”

“Take Marcus Vance and Victoria DeLuca to Pier 42,” Gabriel said softly. “It’s time to clean the city.”
