Chapter 4 - THE GHOST IN THE MIRROR

Two months passed, and the Moretti mansion underwent a transformation that astonished every servant, guard, and associate who crossed its threshold.

The heavy, dark blackout curtains in the grand dining hall were permanently drawn open, allowing bright spring sunlight to warm the polished parquet floors. The terrible, screaming night terrors that had plagued Mia and Bella had vanished completely.

Every evening at seven o'clock, Sarah would sit on the rug in the nursery, reading bedtime stories or singing old Italian lullabies while the twins curled against her like soft kittens. Within twenty minutes, both girls would be fast asleep, holding Sarah's hands.

Dante found himself coming home earlier every day. The man who used to spend twenty hours a day in smoke-filled backrooms controlling dock strikes and political elections was now sitting at the head of his long walnut dining table at six o'clock sharply.

"Look, Daddy!" four-year-old Mia giggled during dinner one Tuesday evening, holding up a paper plate covered in bright green and purple finger paint. "Sarah helped me draw a dragon! It protects the house!"

Dante picked up the paper plate, examining it with total seriousness. "A dragon with purple wings? Very impressive, Mia. Is it stronger than Enzo?"

"Much stronger!" Bella declared loudly, her small mouth covered in spaghetti sauce. "It eats bad guys for breakfast!"

Across the table, Sarah sat in a light blue sundress Dante had purchased for her—part of a massive new wardrobe he had ordered to replace her worn, frayed clothes. She smiled warmly at the girls, her eyes sparkling with a soft, peaceful joy.

Dante watched her over the rim of his wine glass. Over the past eight weeks, his initial suspicion had slowly evaporated, replaced by something far more complex and dangerous. Sarah was no longer just the nanny. She was the soul of the house. She laughed with the staff, she baked biscuits with Arthur in the kitchen, and she looked at Dante not with the terrifying awe his men possessed, but with a deep, quiet understanding that made his heart ache.

After the girls were tucked into bed, Dante walked out onto the expansive second-floor balcony overlooking the illuminated gardens and swimming pool. The night air was cool, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine and fresh rain.

A soft step sounded behind him. Sarah walked out onto the stone patio, holding a small mug of hot tea.

"They’re out cold," Sarah said softly, leaning against the wrought-iron railing beside him. "Mia was trying to stay awake to show you her third drawing, but she didn't last five minutes."

"Thank you, Sarah," Dante said, his voice unusually soft as he stared out at the dark skyline of Chicago.

"You don't have to keep thanking me, Dante," she smiled, taking a sip of her tea. "I love them. They're amazing little girls."

Dante was silent for a long moment. Then, he reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, setting it gently on the balcony railing between them.

Sarah looked at the box, then up at him, puzzled. "What’s this?"

"Open it," Dante said quietly.

Sarah lifted the lid. Resting on the black velvet was an exquisite platinum necklace holding a tear-shaped emerald surrounded by small, flawless diamonds. It was worth more than her family had earned in three generations.

Sarah gasped, stepping back slightly. "Dante... no. I can't accept this. It's too much."

"It belonged to Isabella," Dante said, his voice heavy with a dark, painful memory. "Her mother gave it to her on our wedding day. It’s a Gordano family heirloom."

Sarah looked up into his gray eyes, her heart pounding against her ribs. "If it was your wife's, you should keep it for the girls when they grow up."

Dante took a step closer to her. The cool night wind blew a strand of her auburn hair across her face, and without thinking, Dante reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently tucking the strand behind her ear. Sarah shivered at his touch, but she didn't pull away.

"Isabella died three years ago, Sarah," Dante whispered, his face inches from hers. "For three years, I thought I was dead too. I thought my only job in this world was to protect her memory and destroy the men who took her from me. But when I look at you... I don't see a ghost anymore. I see a future."

Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked up at the powerful, dangerous man who ruled an underworld empire, seeing the profound vulnerability and raw tenderness in his gaze.

"Dante..." she whispered softly.

Dante leaned down, his lips brushing hers in a slow, deep, devastatingly gentle kiss. It was a kiss born from years of shared grief, healing warmth, and an undeniable, burning passion that had been building between them for months.

Sarah closed her eyes, her hands naturally coming up to rest against his broad chest, feeling the heavy, thunderous beat of his heart beneath his shirt.

When Dante finally pulled back, his gray eyes were dark with emotion. He picked up the platinum necklace, unclasped it, and stepped behind her, gently fastening the cool metal around her delicate neck.

"It belongs to a Gordano woman," Dante whispered near her ear, his breath warm against her skin. "And you are the only woman who belongs in this house."

Before Sarah could answer, the heavy double glass doors of the balcony slammed open.

Enzo burst onto the patio, his face pale as chalk, his hand gripping his holstered weapon.

"Boss!" Enzo yelled, his voice laced with pure panic. "We have a major breach! The Outfit—Don Carmine's crew just struck the eastern gates! They’ve cut the power to the perimeter!"

Suddenly, the warm lights illuminating the mansion and gardens plunged into pitch black darkness.

From the woods surrounding the estate, the deafening roar of automatic rifle fire erupted into the night air.
