Chapter 9 - The Legacy

Two years later.

The grand ballroom of the Vance estate was filled with gentle orchestral music, soft laughter, and the clinking of champagne flutes.

It was a private gathering—not of dark underworld figures or corrupt politicians, but of real friends, trusted allies, and staff who had become family. Mrs. Gable stood near the dessert table, smiling warmly as she served cake to guests, looking happier and younger than she had in decades. Viktor stood near the grand entrance, wearing a sharp black tux, looking less like a lethal enforcer and more like a proud uncle.

In the center of the room, Clara Vance stood in a stunning, sweeping white lace gown, her hand resting comfortably inside Declan’s arm.

Their wedding had been private, quiet, and breathtaking. Held in the estate’s blooming rose gardens overlooking the sea, Declan had placed a stunning diamond band on Clara’s finger, swearing an oath before God and their closest loved ones to honor, love, and protect her for the rest of his days.

Now, as the music played softly, Declan led Clara toward the open French doors leading out to the balcony.

Down in the garden, little Leo—now nearly three years old, wearing a tiny black bow tie—was chasing a butterfly through the grass, laughing hysterically while Viktor walked slowly behind him, making sure the boy didn't trip over the flowerbeds.

“Look at them,” Clara said with a soft chuckle, leaning her head against Declan’s shoulder. “The most feared enforcer in New England is currently playing hide-and-seek with a toddler.”

“Viktor is soft,” Declan teased gently, wrapping his arm around Clara’s waist, pulling her body flush against his. “I’m thinking of replacing him.”

“You love him and you know it,” Clara said, poking his chest gently.

Declan looked down at his wife. The moonlight caught the silver thread in her white dress, making her glow like an angel. He reached up, his long fingers cupping her cheek, tilting her face up toward his.

“I love you,” Declan said softly, his voice full of a deep, resonant tenderness. “I love you more than life itself, Clara.”

Clara’s heart swelled with overwhelming happiness. She reached up, taking his face in her hands, kissing him deeply, passionately under the star-lit sky.

When they finally broke apart, Clara took Declan’s large, scarred right hand—the hand that wore his gold wedding band right beside his silver signet ring—and gently placed it flat against her stomach.

Declan blinked, looking down at his hand, then up into Clara’s glowing eyes.

“Clara?” he whispered, his breath catching in his throat.

Clara smiled, her eyes brimming with happy tears. “Leo is going to be a big brother, Declan.”

Declan Vance—the man who had faced down armies, built empires, and ruled a city with an iron fist—felt his knees go weak.

He looked down at her stomach, then back up at her face, his gray-blue eyes wide with pure, unadulterated awe.

“A baby?” Declan whispered, his voice shaking.

“A baby,” Clara confirmed, nodding softly. “Our baby.”

Declan let out a joyous, breathless sound, wrapping his arms around her waist and lifting her right off her feet, spinning her around on the moonlit balcony while she laughed happily against his neck.

He set her down gently, holding her face between his hands, kissing her lips, her forehead, her cheeks with frantic, boundless joy.

“Thank you,” Declan breathed, resting his forehead against hers, tears of pure happiness glistening in his eyes. “Thank you for saving me, Clara.”

“You saved us first,” Clara whispered softly, pressing her lips against his.
