Chapter 7 - The Light in the Dark

The heavy steel door of the safe room hissed as the hydraulic seals released.

Clara whipped around, pulling a small silver kitchen knife she had hidden in her sweater pocket, standing protectively in front of the sofa where Leo lay sleeping.

, standing in the bright fluorescent light of the corridor, was Declan.

His tactical vest was scarred and scuffed, his face smeared with soot and blood. His crisp white shirt was torn at the shoulder, revealing a grazed bullet wound that was slowly dripping red onto his arm.

He looked terrifying. He looked like the devil himself coming out of hell.

Yet, as his eyes met Clara’s, the terrifying edge instantly dissolved.

Clara dropped the kitchen knife onto the floor with a clatter. “Declan!”

She ran across the room, throwing her arms around his broad, armored chest without a second thought. She buried her face into his neck, sobbing with relief.

Declan froze for a second, startled by the sudden, fierce warmth of her embrace. Slowly, his long arms wrapped around her, pulling her tight against his body, resting his jaw against the top of her dark hair.

“It’s over,” Declan murmured into her hair, his voice rough and raspy. “It’s done, Clara. You’re safe.”

Clara pulled back slightly, her hands reaching up to touch his face, wiping a smear of soot off his strong cheekbone. Tears were running down her cheeks. “You’re hurt!”

“It’s just a graze,” Declan said, though his eyes softened as her warm fingers brushed against his skin. “I’ve had worse from falling off a bicycle as a boy.”

He looked past her toward the couch. Leo was sitting up, rubbing his eyes with small, chubby fists, blinking lazily at the bright lights.

Declan walked over, kneeling beside the couch. He held out his broad, dirt-stained hand.

Leo looked at the hand, then up at Declan’s bruised face. Instead of crying or shrinking back, the baby let out a tiny, happy squeak and grabbed Declan’s bloody pinky finger with his entire hand, squeezing with all his little might.

Declan let out a soft, breathless laugh—a real, genuine sound that reverberated softly in the quiet room.

“The kid really has no survival instincts,” Declan muttered, looking up at Clara with a faint smile. “Look at him. He thinks I’m a toy.”

“He knows you’re his protector,” Clara said softly, sitting down on the couch beside him, placing her hand gently over Declan’s hand. “We both know it.”

Declan looked at their joined hands—his large, scarred, battle-worn fingers intertwined with her soft, warm hand, and the tiny baby fingers holding onto him like an anchor.

The dark, lonely world he had inhabited for ten years shattered completely. The ghost of his dead brother was finally laid to rest, replaced by the living, breathing warmth of the mother and child sitting beside him.

“The house is ruined downstairs,” Declan said quietly, looking into Clara’s eyes. “It will take months to rebuild.”

“It’s just wood and glass, Declan,” Clara whispered. “Home isn't the building. It’s the people inside it.”

Declan reached up with his free hand, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind Clara’s ear. His thumb lingered on her soft jawline.

“Then stay,” Declan breathed, his voice low and intense. “Don't go back to that cold apartment. Don't go back to hiding from the world. Stay here... with me. Let me give him a future. Let me give you everything.”

Clara felt her heart leap into her throat. The fear, the uncertainty, the terror of the last few months vanished into thin air, replaced by an overwhelming sense of belonging.

“Yes,” Clara whispered, tears of joy filling her eyes. “We’ll stay.”

Declan leaned in slowly, resting his forehead against hers, taking a deep, long breath of her scent. Outside, the blood and fire of the East Coast underworld raged on, but inside the dark room beneath the earth, a new family had been born.
