Chapter 6 - The Dawn of a New Empire

Six months later.

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the executive penthouse overlooking Paseo de la Reforma, casting a warm, golden glow across polished oak floors and minimalist modern art.

I sat at the mahogany conference table, reviewing the quarterly financial audit for the Valeria & Sofía Foundation—a newly established charitable trust funded by Montenegro Enterprises dedicated to providing legal aid, housing, and career re-entry support for single mothers escaping abusive marriages.

The door to the office opened quietly.

Alejandro walked in, holding a steaming mug of black coffee in one hand and a small, brightly wrapped toddler’s toy in the other. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking more relaxed and genuinely happy than he had the day we met on that chaotic commercial flight from Guadalajara.

“How is our chief executive officer handling her morning reports?” Alejandro asked with a warm, teasing smile, leaning over the back of my chair to drop a gentle kiss on the top of my head.

“Our CEO is currently demanding more crackers and less paperwork,” I laughed, leaning back against his chest, breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of cedar and rain. “Though she did successfully approve the new childcare center grant for Iztapalapa this morning.”

“Good,” Alejandro murmured, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. “Because her mother has a much more important meeting to attend tonight.”

I turned my head slightly, looking up into his dark, affectionate eyes. “Oh? And what meeting is that?”

Alejandro reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-covered black box. He didn't drop to one knee—he didn't need to. The gravity between us had already settled long ago, forged through shared storms, quiet nights, and an unspoken promise to heal each other’s broken pasts.

“A permanent merger,” Alejandro whispered softly, popping the lid open to reveal a dazzling, vintage diamond ring that caught the morning light like a captured star. “Between Montenegro Enterprises, the Valeria Foundation, and a family that finally feels complete. What do you say, Valeria? Will you stay with me—not just as a guest under my roof, but as my wife, my partner, and the queen of my world?”

Down the hall, little Sofía’s joyous toddler giggle echoed through the penthouse as her nanny wheeled her into the sunny parlor.

I looked down at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had changed the entire trajectory of my life when he asked me to pretend I was asleep on his shoulder.

“I think,” I smiled, sliding my arms around his neck and pulling him down for a deep, lingering kiss, “that I’ve been asleep for a very long time, Alejandro… and I’m finally wide awake.”
