Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the VIP Lounge

Rodrigo looked immaculate in his expensive Italian wool suit, but his eyes were wild, bloodshot, and frantic. He had evidently managed to bribe or hustle his way past the stringent security check using his family’s political connections in Guadalajara, desperate to salvage his crumbling social standing and locate his missing wife.

As his gaze swept across the room, it locked directly onto me—standing arm-in-arm with Alejandro Montenegro in the center of the ballroom.

Rodrigo’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. His mouth dropped open, his jaw slackening in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

Before I could react, Rodrigo shoved past a waiter carrying a tray of appetizers and stormed directly toward us, his face twisting into an ugly mask of rage and humiliation.

“Valeria?!” Rodrigo shouted, his voice cutting loudly through the refined murmur of the gala, causing nearby guests to turn and stare in shock. “You ungrateful, scheming little bitch! You’ve been hiding out here with him?!”

The string quartet stuttered to a halt. Security guards in the corners of the room instantly tensed, their hands dropping toward their belts, but Alejandro raised a single, calm hand, signaling them to stand down.

Alejandro didn't flinch. He slowly stepped in front of me, shielding me with his broad shoulders, his eyes locking onto Rodrigo with the cold, dead-eyed focus of an apex predator.

“Mr. Salinas, I presume,” Alejandro said, his voice smooth as silk yet laced with razor wire. “You are trespassing in a private foundation gala without an invitation. And more importantly, you are raising your voice in front of a lady.”

Rodrigo was shaking with fury, his finger trembling as he pointed it at Alejandro’s chest. “Stay out of this, Montenegro! This is a domestic dispute between me and my legal wife! She abducted my daughter and stole matrimonial assets, and you’re harboring a fugitive! I’ll have your company dragged through every federal court in the country for interference—”

“Your dealerships are currently being seized by federal marshals for tax evasion and fraudulent inventory inflation, Mr. Salinas,” Alejandro interrupted quietly, cutting through Rodrigo’s rant like a scalpel. “Your bank accounts were frozen twelve hours ago under a court order issued by Judge Morales in the financial crimes division. And as for your marriage… the divorce papers were served to your Guadalajara office this morning, complete with full documentation of your domestic abuse, financial manipulation, and extra-marital affairs.”

Rodrigo staggered backward as if he had been physically struck in the chest. All the color drained from his face.

“Th—that’s a lie… you fabricated those…” Rodrigo stammered, sweat beading on his forehead.

“Everything is verifiable, down to the last peso,” Alejandro said coldly. “Now, you have two choices, Rodrigo. You can walk out those glass doors voluntarily right now, or Commander Morales and his federal detail can escort you out in handcuffs through the service entrance where the press corps are currently smoking cigarettes. Choose wisely.”

Rodrigo looked around the room. Dozens of Mexico’s most influential business leaders, journalists, and politicians were staring at him with undisguised contempt and amusement. He realized he had walked straight into a trap designed by a man who could crush him with a single phone call.

With a look of sheer, venomous hatred directed at both of us, Rodrigo turned on his heel and bolted toward the exit, nearly tripping over his own expensive shoes in his haste to escape.

The ballroom fell silent for a beat, and then the string quartet smoothly resumed playing as if nothing had happened.

Alejandro turned around, looking down at me with genuine concern in his eyes. “Are you alright, Valeria?”

I looked up at him—at the man who had pulled me from the wreckage of my life, who had fought my battles without asking for anything in return, and who made me feel safer than I had ever felt in my entire existence.

Tears welled in my eyes, but this time, they were tears of profound, overwhelming release.

“I’m more than alright,” I whispered, a radiant smile breaking across my face. “I’m finally free.”
