Chapter 5 - JUSTICE IN THE SUPREME COURT

Three weeks later, the news of the Vance Pharmaceutical scandal had shaken the entire nation.

The headlines across major news networks were unanimous: “PHARMACEUTICAL TYCOON ARRESTED FOR CHILD TORTURE AND MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.” “ HEROIC ER DOCTOR EXPOSES HORRIFIC CAST EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME.”

The preliminary hearing was held at the Colorado State Supreme Court in downtown Denver.

The courtroom was packed with hundreds of journalists, legal analysts, and hospital workers. Arthur Sterling sat at the defense table, wearing a orange prison jumpsuit, his hands and feet chained in heavy steel shackles. Beside him sat his disgraced attorney Eleanor Vance, who was now facing federal conspiracy charges of her own.

I sat at the prosecution table alongside Victoria Vance, wearing a dark green tailored blazer, holding a thick legal folder containing Leo's medical charts, x-rays, and physical evidence photographs.

The judge—Honorable Judge Evelyn Carter—slammed her wooden gavel onto the bench, her face stern and unforgiving.

"We are here to determine the final custody, asset restoration, and criminal trial scheduling for the matter of the State of Colorado versus Arthur Sterling," Judge Carter announced.

Eleanor Vance stood up, trying one last desperate legal maneuver.

"Your Honor!" Eleanor argued, her voice lacking its former arrogance. "We move to suppress the physical evidence recovered from the fiberglass cast! Dr. Sarah Jenkins performed an illegal, unconsented medical extraction without the legal guardian's written permission! The flash drive and documents are fruits of a poisonous tree!"

Judge Carter looked at Eleanor with utter contempt.

"Sit down, Ms. Vance," Judge Carter ordered coldly. "Under the Emergency Medical Protection Act and the Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Doctrine, Dr. Jenkins acted with exemplary professional bravery. Not only is the evidence fully admissible, but this court is recommending Dr. Jenkins for the State Medal of Valor."

A wave of applause broke out across the courtroom gallery. Arthur Sterling slammed his shackled hands onto the table, glaring at me with psychotic rage.

"She ruined my life!" Arthur screamed, his composure completely collapsing as he lunged toward our table before two heavy bailiffs pinned him back into his chair. "That child was mine! The money was mine!"

"You are a monster, Mr. Sterling," Judge Carter declared, her voice echoing through the vast courtroom. "You used an innocent orphan as a human safe. You subjected an eight-year-old child to unbearable physical torture to hide your greed."

Judge Carter picked up her pen, signing a stack of official court decrees with bold, sweeping strokes.

"Order number one," Judge Carter read aloud. "Arthur Sterling and Victoria Sterling are hereby stripped of all legal guardianship, voting rights, and corporate proxy claims forever. Order number two: Arthur Sterling is to be held without bail pending his double-murder and child torture trial, facing a minimum sentence of life imprisonment without parole."

The courtroom erupted into cheers. Arthur was dragged out of the room by four bailiffs, his frantic curses fading into the hallway outside.

Judge Carter then looked at me, her eyes filled with gentle warmth.

"Order number three," Judge Carter continued. "Regarding the temporary legal guardianship and physical custody of Leo Vance..."

I held my breath, my hands tightening against my blazer.

"Dr. Sarah Jenkins," Judge Carter said softly. "The state child protection review board has evaluated your home, your background, and the profound psychological bond you have formed with the young boy over the past month. Leo Vance has explicitly requested to remain in your care."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes as I looked up at the judge.

"Therefore," Judge Carter smiled, slamming her gavel down with a loud, triumphant thunk, "temporary foster custody and emergency medical guardianship of Leo Vance is hereby awarded to Dr. Sarah Jenkins, effective immediately. Court is adjourned."
