Chapter 4 - THE BATTLE IN THE ICU

For three days, Pediatric ICU Suite 3 was transformed into a fortress.

Armed police officers guarded the double doors around the clock. The glass windows were covered with heavy blinds to prevent press cameras and private investigators from taking photos. Inside, Leo lay connected to IV lines, antibiotics, and heart monitors, slowly fighting his way back from the brink of septic destruction.

I didn't leave the hospital. I slept on a small leather couch in the doctor's lounge, waking up every two hours to check his vitals, adjust his pain medication, and hold his tiny hand when the nightmares woke him up screaming.

On the fourth night, at 2:00 a.m., the heart monitor began to beep in a soft, steady rhythm.

I sat beside his bed, holding a cup of warm chamomile tea. Leo opened his big hazel eyes. For the first time in four days, the glassy, feverish haze was gone. He looked at me—really looked at me—with pure, unclouded childhood awareness.

"Dr. Sarah?" he whispered, his voice tiny and raspy.

"I'm right here, Leo," I smiled softly, reaching out to smooth his dark hair away from his forehead. "How are you feeling?"

He looked down at his right arm. It was wrapped in clean, soft white bandages, resting comfortably on a blue foam pillow.

"It doesn't smell bad anymore," Leo whispered, a small tear rolling down his cheek. "And... and it doesn't burn like fire."

"The bad things are gone, sweetheart," I reassured him gently. "We cleaned everything out. Your arm is going to heal."

Leo looked around the room, his small body shivering under the blanket. "Is... is Uncle Arthur coming to put the hard boot back on me?"

My heart broke into a thousand pieces, but my resolve hardened like diamonds.

"No, Leo," I said firmly, taking his small left hand in both of mine. "Uncle Arthur is never, ever going to touch you again. The police know what he did. But I need you to be very brave for me, okay? Can you tell me what happened before you came to the hospital?"

Leo swallowed hard, staring at the white blanket.

"Uncle Arthur told me... he told me I was bad," Leo sobbed quietly. "He said my mommy and daddy died because I didn't listen. Then... then his friend with the big tools took me into the basement. He squeezed my arm in a black machine until it made a loud snap sound."

I clenched my jaw so hard my teeth hurt, keeping my voice soft and calm. "And then?"

"I cried... I screamed for my mommy," Leo choked out, tears pouring down his cheeks now. "But Uncle Arthur slapped my face and told me to shut up. He brought out a big red box with wires and a silver stick. He pushed it into the skin where the bone broke... and then the lady with the fake hair put the blue hard stuff over it and said if I told anyone, they would break my other arm and throw me in the river."

I leaned forward, wrapping my arms gently around his small shoulders, pulling him into a soft, protective hug. He buried his face in my neck, sobbing uncontrollably, releasing eleven months of trapped, terrifying horror.

"You are so brave, Leo," I whispered into his hair. "You saved yourself by surviving. And now I'm going to make sure those bad people go away forever."

Suddenly, the ICU door chimed open.

Marcus stepped inside, accompanied by Victoria Vance—the fierce, relentless state prosecutor who had helped me bring down corporate criminals in the past.

Victoria looked at the sobbing boy in my arms, her sharp eyes softening with profound compassion before hardening into ice as she turned to me.

"Sarah," Victoria said, setting a encrypted laptop on the table beside the bed. "The state forensic tech team just decrypted the flash drive you pulled out of his cast."

"What was on it?" I asked, keeping my arm around Leo.

"Everything," Victoria revealed, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "Video recordings of Arthur Sterling bribing state judges, bank records showing two hundred million dollars transferred to illegal human trial facilities in Eastern Europe, and... a hidden audio recording from the night Leo's parents died."

I looked up, stunned. "An audio recording?"

"Arthur compromised their car's electronic steering system," Victoria said coldly. "He murdered Leo's parents to get control of the trust fund. The entire blueprint of his crime empire was stored on that drive... because he believed nobody would ever think to look inside a living child's flesh."

"It's over for him," Marcus smiled, his eyes gleaming. "The State Attorney General just issued an arrest warrant for Arthur Sterling and his entire legal team for grand murder, child torture, and treason."

Leo looked up at Victoria, his small hazel eyes blinking through his tears. "Is... is Uncle Arthur going to jail?"

Victoria knelt down beside his bed, taking a small plush teddy bear out of her bag and setting it gently in Leo's lap.

"He's going away to a very dark, very far away place, Leo," Victoria promised him softly. "And he's never coming back."
