Chapter 4: The Demolition of Vanessa Whitmore

Brock Whitmore stammered, stepping forward with his hands raised. "Julian, please! Vanessa didn't know! It was a mistake! The harbor redevelopment project—our firms are supposed to sign the contracts tomorrow morning—"
"The harbor project is dead," Julian declared. He didn't raise his voice, but the finality in it cut through Brock's pleas like a guillotine.
Brock went pale. "Julian, you can't do that. We've invested everything into those permits—"
"I can, and I just did," Julian said, turning his freezing gaze onto Vanessa.
"Your wealth is loud, Mrs. Whitmore," Julian said, stepping toward her table. "But it is entirely rented from men like me."
"My mother wore that gray coat because she spent forty years working two jobs to put me through school. Every thread on her back has more dignity than your entire lineage."
Julian turned to his lead bodyguard. "Call the bank. Revoke the Whitmore credit lines. Call the city inspectors. I want a full audit on every single one of Brock’s construction sites by 6:00 AM tomorrow."
"Julian, please! Have mercy!" Vanessa begged, tears finally smudging her perfect mascara. She looked at the old woman she had mocked, but Rose only looked away, her heart too gentle to enjoy the cruelty.

"You wanted my mother out of your view," Julian said coldly. "By tomorrow, you won't even be able to afford a view in this city. Get out."
Brock dragged his weeping wife out into the freezing snow, their social and financial lives entirely demolished in a matter of minutes.
