Chapter 1: The Chilling Arrival

The heavy oak doors of Maison Greer didn't just open; they flew back against the marble walls with a violent crash.

A wave of freezing Chicago winter air swept through the dining room, instantly melting the elite ambiance. The soft jazz from the grand piano halted in a discordant screech. Every conversation died in throats. Every eye snapped to the entrance.

Standing in the doorway was a man who didn't just occupy space—he dominated it.

He was towering, broad-shouldered, and wrapped in a tailored charcoal overcoat that practically radiated absolute authority. His jaw was a hard, brutal line, and his eyes had the terrifying calmness of a predator who never had to raise his voice. Behind him stood three massive men in dark suits, their expressions as unreadable as stone.

The entire room stopped breathing.

Preston Vale, who had been lingering near Vanessa Whitmore’s table like a sycophantic shadow, went completely rigid. His slicked-back hair practically gleamed under the chandeliers as he scrambled toward the entrance, his face twisting into the most submissive smile he could muster.

"Mr. Vance!" Preston gasped, bowing his head. "We... we had no idea you were coming tonight! The private VIP lounge is vacant, of course. Please, let me take your coat."

Julian Vance.

Emma Collins felt her heart drop into her stomach. Even a waitress living paycheck to paycheck knew that name. Julian Vance was the ruthless billionaire tech mogul and real estate tycoon who practically owned the Chicago skyline. He was a man who broke empires before breakfast and bought out whole conglomerates on a whim.

Brock Whitmore, Vanessa’s husband, practically tripped over his own chair trying to stand up, his red face flushing deeper as he extended a trembling hand. "Julian! What a spectacular surprise! Vanessa and I were just enjoying some champagne. Come, sit with us!"

Julian didn't look at Brock. He didn't look at Preston. He simply unbuttoned his coat, his dark eyes sweeping the room like a searchlight.

"I’m not here for business, Whitmore," Julian said. His voice was a deep, resonant rumble that made the crystal glasses on the tables hum. "I'm here to have dinner with my mother for her seventy-ninth birthday. I told her to pick any restaurant she wanted."
