Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

"You think you won, Annie?" Juliette laughed, a dark, raspy sound that resonated through the grand foyer as federal agents pulled her hands behind her back and clicked the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You think you pulled off a brilliant little trap? Look at your husband!"
I turned my eyes to Mark. He was standing near the fireplace, but he wasn't looking at his mother, nor was he looking at me. He was staring at his phone, his face completely devoid of color, trembling violently.
"Mark?" I said, a sudden knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach. "Mark, what's wrong?"
Juliette cackled loudly as the federal agents began marching her toward the front door. "Tell her, Mark! Tell your brilliant, arrogant wife what happens when the master debt is called!"
Mr. Kane frowned, stepping toward Mark. "Mr. Vance, what is she talking about?"
Mark slowly dropped his phone onto the floor. The screen was cracked, but the glowing text message was fully visible:
ALERT: ASSET LIQUIDATION EXECUTED. TRUST FUND ACCOUNT #4892 HAS BEEN CLEARED. BALANCE: $0.00.
My heart plummeted into a dark, bottomless abyss. "My trust fund... my family's trust fund? Mark... what did you do?"
"I... I didn't know, Annie!" Mark fell to his knees, clutching his head, sobbing uncontrollably. "Six months ago... when Mom said she was going to be killed by the offshore bookies... I didn't just transfer my money. The loan shark... he made me put up a third-party guarantor bond! He said it was just a formality! He said as long as the interest was paid every month, the primary capital wouldn't be touched!"
"Who was the loan shark, Mark?" Mr. Kane demanded sternly, grabbing Mark by the collar. "Who held the guarantor bond?"
Mark looked up, his eyes filled with sheer, unadulterated terror. "It... it wasn't a bank. It was Victor Ross."
The room seemed to freeze. Even the tactical FBI agents stopped in their tracks for a brief second.
Victor Ross was not a petty criminal. He was a notorious, high-level organized crime figure who controlled real estate, predatory lending, and underground casinos across three states. He was a man known for ruthless asset seizures, brutal enforcement, and vanishing anyone who crossed him.
"You gave Victor Ross access to my family's trust fund?" I whispered, my voice barely audible above the hum of the air conditioner. "The trust fund my late father built for our children's future?"
"I thought I could pay it back before you noticed!" Mark wept, pressing his forehead against the floorboards. "Mom swore she had a winning streak coming! She swore she was going to double the money in the underground poker matches!"
Chloe was crying hysterically now, grabbing her children and running out the front door past the police cars, terrified of being linked to the name Victor Ross.
Juliette turned at the front door, looking back at me with absolute, demonic glee despite being in police custody. "You locked the pantries, Annie! You put price tags on my meals! But Victor Ross doesn't put price tags on his debts... he takes the whole house. He takes the land. He takes everything."
"Take her out," the FBI team leader commanded, shoving Juliette through the front door into the flashing lights of the squad car.
The front doors slammed shut, leaving the main hall in deafening silence.
The security cameras were still rolling. The laminated menus were still sitting on the patio table outside. The locks were still secured on the pantries.
But my entire life's financial foundation had just been obliterated in a single instant.
Mr. Kane quickly pulled out his encrypted phone, dialing a number rapidly. "Annie, listen to me very carefully. Victor Ross executing a trust liquidation without a court order means he's moving faster than legal channels allow. That means his enforcers are already on their way to take physical possession of this estate."
"Physical possession?" I said, staring at the legal papers in my hand. "This is my home! My children are upstairs!"
May you like
"You need to get the children and leave now," Mr. Kane warned gravely. "We will fight this in federal court, but tonight, this house is a battleground."
CHAPTER HOOK: Before I could run upstairs to grab my kids, the heavy iron electric gates at the end of our long drive were violently rammed open, and two dark armored SUVs accelerated up the gravel path, blinding us with high-beam headlights.
