Chapter 4 - The Counter-Trap

"Put down the phone, Annie," Juliette said into her mobile device, her tone dropping into a chilling, calm confidence that sent a shiver down my spine. "Or the Child Protective Services team currently waiting at the end of your driveway will enter this house with an emergency removal order."
I froze. The 911 dispatcher’s voice filtered through my speakerphone: "911, what is your emergency?"
I tapped the screen, muting my call, but kept the line open. "What did you just say?"
Juliette smiled—a dark, ugly, triumphant smile that revealed the full depth of her venomous nature. She smoothed down her designer blouse and took a step closer to me over the broken glass.
"Did you really think I came here unprepared, Annie?" Juliette purred softly. "I’ve known for months that you were growing rebellious. You stopped answering my texts promptly. You made rude remarks at Thanksgiving. So, I took out an insurance policy."
She gestured toward her daughter Chloe, who pulled out an iPad from her bag and opened a file.
"Over the last six months," Juliette continued, "I have made weekly anonymous reports to the state child welfare agency. I reported that you suffer from severe postpartum depression, that you lock food away from your children as a form of psychological punishment—which, ironically, you just proved by putting locks on the pantries—and that you maintain an unsafe, hostile home environment."
"You are insane," I whispered, my voice trembling with rage. "My children are healthy, loved, and top of their class! No inspector would ever believe you!"
"They don't have to believe me permanently," Juliette sneered. "They just have to believe me today. Outside, parked down the road, is a social worker named Agent Vance—who happens to be my late husband's second cousin. She has an emergency temporary custody order based on a sworn affidavit signed by Mark two weeks ago."
I whipped my head around to look at Mark. "Mark... tell me she's lying. Tell me you didn't sign an affidavit against your own wife!"
Mark looked like he was about to vomit. He collapsed into a kitchen chair, burying his face in his hands. "Annie... she told me it was just a legal buffer! She said if you ever tried to take the kids and leave me, the document would make sure the kids stayed in our family! She swore she would never use it unless you tried to destroy our marriage!"
"You utter, spineless fool!" I screamed, the full horror of what my husband had done crashing down on me.
"So here is the new arrangement, Annie," Juliette commanded, stepping right up to my face. Her strong perfume filled my nose, sickly sweet and suffocating. "You will hang up that 911 call. You will go to your keypad, unlock every pantry and freezer in this house, and cook a lavish, four-course dinner for my family. Then, you will sign a power-of-attorney document giving Mark total control over your family trust fund."
"And if I refuse?" I rasped, tears of fury burning the back of my eyes.
"If you refuse, I press send on this text," Juliette said, holding up her phone screen. "Agent Vance will drive up the driveway with two state troopers, execute the emergency removal order, and take your children into state foster care for the weekend while an investigation is launched. You won't see them again until a judge hears the case in three weeks."
Chloe snickered in the background. The grandchildren were giggling, oblivious to the monstrous blackmail unfolding in the sunroom.
Mark sat crying quietly in the chair, worthless and defeated.
Juliette raised her phone, her thumb hovering over the screen. "You have ten seconds, Annie. Unlock the food and start cooking, or lose your children."
I looked at Juliette’s sneering face. I looked at Mark’s bent back. I looked at the broken glass on the floor.
And then, slowly, a cold, sharp calm washed over me. The fear evaporated, replaced by an absolute, crystal-clear focus.
"Ten seconds, Annie," Juliette warned, her eyes narrowing. "Ten... nine... eight..."
"You really should have checked who was operating the security cameras in this house, Juliette," I said softly.
May you like
Juliette paused, her thumb freezing above the screen. "What?"
CHAPTER HOOK: Before Juliette could press the button, the front door was kicked wide open with a violent slam, and six armed officers in federal tactical gear flooded the foyer—led by a man Juliette never, in her wildest nightmares, expected to see again.
