Chapter 4 - Roses for Sarah

Fifteen minutes later, Lupita personally escorted us up the private elevator to the Penthouse Suite—the very room Sarah and I had designed together years ago.
The suite was warm, quiet, and spotless. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline, bathed in the soft glow of twilight. On the far wall, illuminated by a warm picture light, hung the oil painting of Sarah. She was laughing, her hair windblown against the backdrop of our very first hotel construction site.
I gently laid Lily down on the plush king-sized bed. She gave a small, contented sigh, turning onto her side and snuggling her stuffed rabbit into her chest, sound asleep.
I pulled the crushed red roses from my coat pocket.
Lupita walked in quietly carrying a crystal vase filled with fresh water. She set it carefully on the side table beneath Sarah’s portrait.
"I took the liberty of finding a vase, sir," Lupita whispered softly.
"Thank you, Lupita," I said, taking the stems from her hand.
Together, we trimmed the crushed leaves and arranged the deep red petals beneath Sarah’s image. The room felt instantly filled with a gentle, comforting warmth—as if Sarah’s presence was sitting right there beside us on the edge of the bed.
"Your wife was a very special person," Lupita said gently, looking up at the portrait. "I remember when she visited the building during construction seven years ago. She stopped on the third floor just to ask about my family and bring us cold drinks. She never walked past anyone without seeing them."
A lump formed in my throat, but for the first time in three years, it didn't burn with grief. It felt like peace.
"She built the heart of this company," I whispered, looking at Sarah’s laughing face. "Tonight, you saved it."

Lupita bowed her head slightly. "I will leave you two to rest, Mr. Vance. If you or little Lily need anything at all, I will be right downstairs."
"Thank you, Lupita. For everything."
