Chapter 4 - The Eye in the Chandelier

By midnight, the Greenwich police had arrived at the Whitmore estate, accompanied by Grant, his legal team, and a forensics team.

Vanessa sat on the living room sofa, flanked by her wealthy father, Arthur Hale, and two high-priced defense attorneys.

"This is an outrage, Grant!" Arthur Hale barked, slamming his fist on the coffee table. "My daughter is a Hale! You are dragging her name through the mud based on the word of a common maid!"

"Grace Bennett is not a 'common maid,' Arthur," Grant replied, standing by the fireplace, his face carved out of granite. "She is family."

"There is no evidence!" Vanessa’s lead attorney chimed in smoothly. "It’s a classic he-said-she-said scenario. My client maintains Miss Bennett tripped over her own uniform. Without physical proof or video footage, no charges will hold in court."

Vanessa leaned back, a subtle, triumphant smirk touching her lips. She knew the Whitmore mansion was a historical landmark; Grant had always refused to install visible security cameras in the living areas to preserve the aesthetic of the 1920s architecture.

As far as she knew, the grand foyer was a complete blind spot.

Just then, Frank, the chief of security, walked into the room carrying a high-tech forensic laptop.

"Sir," Frank said, stepping up to Grant. "We finished reviewing the digital infrastructure."

"What infrastructure?" Vanessa’s lawyer scoffed. "There are no cameras in the foyer."

"There are no wall cameras," Frank corrected coldly. "However, four months ago, Mr. Whitmore upgraded the home's automated climate and lighting control system. The central crystal chandelier in the foyer was retrofitted with an integrated, high-definition 4K thermal lens embedded inside the center glass sphere to monitor room temperature and motion."

Vanessa’s smirk instantly vanished. Her face drained of all color.

"It records 24/7 in full 60-frames-per-second audio and video," Frank continued, opening the laptop and turning the screen toward the police officers, Arthur Hale, and the attorneys.

Frank pressed play.

The audio echoed crystal clear through the quiet room:

"Please don’t hurt me... I’m already broken."

"You're just a servant! You're nobody!"

On the high-definition screen, there was no mistaking what happened. The camera captured the entire scene from above: Vanessa dragging Grace, Grace begging for her child's life, and Vanessa lifting her heel and forcefully kicking Grace down twenty-five marble steps.

The video continued, showing Vanessa calmly walking down the stairs, stepping over Grace’s bleeding body, and instructing Marta to lie.

Arthur Hale buried his face in his hands, completely unable to speak. The defense attorneys fell dead silent, closing their folders.

Vanessa began to hyperventilate, shaking her head wildly. "Grant... Grant, please! I wasn't in my right mind! I was stressed about the wedding! Please, don't let them take me!"

Grant walked over to her, looking down at the woman he had almost married with absolute disgust.

"You thought your money and your name made you untouchable," Grant whispered, his eyes cold as ice. "You thought Grace was nobody. But tonight, you destroyed your own life."

The police officers stepped forward, pulling Vanessa up from the sofa and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"Vanessa Hale," the lead detective announced. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault on a pregnant woman, and destruction of evidence."

Screaming and thrashing, Vanessa was dragged out of the mansion in handcuffs, her polished world collapsing into dust.
