Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

At 6:15 PM, Grant Whitmore’s private jet touched down at JFK Airport.

He was returning early from a high-stakes logistics acquisition in London, exhausted but eager to return home. As soon as his phone reconnected to the cellular network, thirty missed calls and urgent text messages flooded his screen.

The most recent was from Marta:

Grant, come to Greenwich Hospital immediately. Grace was pushed down the stairs. It’s bad.

Grant’s blood ran cold. "Driver," he snapped to his chauffeur before even sitting back. "Greenwich Hospital. Run every red light."

Forty minutes later, Grant burst through the doors of the intensive care unit.

Marta was sitting on a plastic chair in the hallway, her uniform stained with dried blood, crying softly into her hands. Sitting beside her were Grace’s three children—seventeen-year-old Kiara holding her two younger brothers, all of them pale and trembling with terror.

"Marta!" Grant rushed forward, dropping to his knee in front of her. "What happened?! Is Grace okay? What about the baby?!"

Marta looked up, her eyes red and hollow. "The doctors are in emergency surgery right now, Grant. She has a fractured pelvis, severe internal bleeding... and the baby... the baby was without oxygen for too long."

Grant felt as if he had been struck in the chest with an iron bar. "Who did this?!"

Before Marta could answer, the elevator doors chimed, and Vanessa walked into the waiting room. She wore a fresh coat, holding a cup of designer coffee, looking perfectly composed.

"Grant! Darling!" Vanessa exclaimed, rushing forward with rehearsed concern, attempting to throw her arms around him. "Thank God you're back! It was terrible... Grace was carrying a load of laundry, lost her footing, and fell down the main stairs. I tried to catch her, but it happened so fast!"

Grant stepped back, avoiding her embrace, his sharp blue eyes locking onto her face. "She fell?"

"Yes! She was so clumsy today," Vanessa sighed softly, shaking her head. "I think the pregnancy made her dizzy. I've already instructed the staff to clean up the hallway so you don't have to see the mess."

Marta stood up, her body shaking with pure outrage. "You lying snake!"

Vanessa turned sharply. "Marta, you are hysterical—"

"You kicked her!" Marta screamed, pointing a finger at Vanessa. "You dragged her up the stairs because you couldn't find your bracelet, and when she begged you not to hurt her baby, you kicked her in the chest!"

Vanessa’s expression hardened, though she quickly turned back to Grant with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Grant, darling, you can't believe a disgruntled employee! She's lying to protect Grace because they're close! Why would I ever do something like that?!"

Grant looked between Vanessa’s flawless, tearful face and Marta’s blood-stained apron.

Then he looked at Kiara and the two little boys sitting on the hospital bench, sobbing quietly.

"Grant," Vanessa whimpered, reaching for his hand. "Send these people home. We have our wedding to plan—"

"Don't touch me," Grant said, his voice dropping into a register so terrifyingly quiet that even the nurses at the desk looked up.

He pulled out his phone and dialed his chief of security.

"Frank," Grant said, staring dead into Vanessa’s eyes. "Lock down the mansion. Nobody enters, nobody leaves, and touch nothing in the main foyer."
