Chapter 5 - Dawn Over Long Island

The first gray light of dawn was beginning to bleed over the horizon of Long Island Sound, painting the sky in pale shades of rose and slate.

I stood by the tall arched window of the master study, watching the mist rise off the water. The nightmare was over. The traitors were in federal custody, the Duca estate was secure, and the dark cloud that had hung over our lives for the past week had finally dissipated.

A pair of warm, heavy footsteps approached from behind.

I turned to see Lorenzo standing there. He had removed his heavy coat, and though his left arm was still cradled in the sling, the haunted, hunted look in his eyes was completely gone.

He held out a small, familiar object in his palm.

It was the broken half of Emma’s pink rabbit scissors.

"I believe this belongs to the head of security," Lorenzo said, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.

I looked down at the plastic rabbit scissors, letting out a soft, tired laugh as I took them from his hand.

"She was very upset when she couldn't find them this morning," I said, slipping the plastic toy into my coat pocket. "She thinks her rabbit can't guard the room without them."

Lorenzo walked over to the mahogany desk, picking up his father’s dented gold pocket watch. He turned it over in his hand, tracing the ruined casing with his thumb.

"Your daughter saved my life, Sophia," Lorenzo said quietly, his dark eyes meeting mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. "Not just by finding me in the cellar, but by reminding me what I was actually fighting to protect. In my world, people only look at what others can take from them. Emma looked at me... and saw a man who needed a hug."

"She doesn't see crime bosses or syndicates," I replied softly. "She just sees people."

"Then maybe it’s time I started living up to the version of myself she believes in," Lorenzo said.

He walked over to the safe behind the grandfather clock, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and laid it neatly on the center of the mahogany desk.

"What is this?" I asked, stepping closer.

"Your resignation as a custodian," Lorenzo said calmly. "Effective immediately. Along with a deed to a house in upstate New York, fully paid for, with a trust fund set up to cover Emma’s education through university."

I stared at the envelope, my heart swelling with a sudden, overwhelming wave of emotion. For seven years, I had survived on scraps, cleaning up other people's dirt, praying for a way out.

"Mr. Duca... I can't accept this," I whispered, though my voice wavered. "I only did what any mother—what any person would do."

"You did what my own blood wouldn't do," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice firm and unyielding. "You showed courage when everyone else chose betrayal. Consider it an investment in my favorite security consultant."

I looked down at the envelope, then up at the formidable, scarred man who had once been the most feared name in New York—and realized that beneath the armor and the bullets, he was simply a man who had finally found something worth keeping safe.

Three hours later, the silver sedan pulled out of the grand iron gates of the Duca estate for the very last time.

In the back seat, Emma was fast asleep against my shoulder, her arms wrapped tightly around her gray stuffed rabbit, the broken pink scissors tucked safely in her pocket.

As the estate faded into the morning mist behind us, I looked out the window at the wide-open highway stretching ahead under a brilliant, sunlit sky. For the first time in our lives, the road belonged entirely to us.
