Chapter 3 - The Ghost Returns

Back at the Ridgewood safe house, the digital display glowed with crisp, crystalline clarity.

Lorenzo sat in a high-backed leather chair, his left arm immobilized in a heavy black canvas sling, his face illuminated by the blue light of the laptop screen. Behind him, Marcus stood with his arms crossed, watching the footage from the concealed camera in the master study with a predatory grin spreading across his face.

"They’re moving the bearer bonds tonight," Marcus murmured, his voice laced with suppressed violence. "Midnight at the Swiss bank gateway. They think they’ve won."

"Greed makes men sloppy," Lorenzo said softly. His voice was steady, devoid of anger, which made it infinitely more terrifying. "Vincent was always an accountant at heart—he understands numbers, but he doesn't understand loyalty. And Sarah... Sarah thinks administrative efficiency is the same thing as absolute power."

Sophia sat at the corner of the wooden table, watching Lorenzo with a mixture of awe and residual fear. Across her lap, Emma was fast asleep, her head resting against Sophia’s shoulder, the broken pink scissors tucked safely into her mother’s coat pocket.

"What’s the plan, Mr. Duca?" Sophia asked, her voice steady despite the high stakes. "You can't just walk back into the mansion. Vincent has forty armed guards patrolling the gates, and the entire commission thinks you're dead."

Lorenzo turned his head to look at her, the harsh light catching the hard planes of his jaw.

"I don't need to walk through the gates, Sophia," Lorenzo said. "My grandfather built this estate with three things in mind: limestone walls to keep enemies out, a reinforced vault to keep wealth safe, and a private utility tunnel to ensure the family could always escape when the walls fell."

"The boathouse tunnel," Dr. Reed noted from the corner, where he was packing his medical bag. "The one we used to evacuate you."

"Precisely," Lorenzo said, standing up slowly and rolling his uninjured shoulder. The pain was sharp, but manageable, dulled by a heavy dose of pharmaceutical-grade painkillers Dr. Reed had prescribed. "The tunnel leads directly into the sub-basement beneath the master study. Right beneath Vincent’s feet."

Marcus reached down and opened a large aluminum Pelican case resting on the floor. Inside lay a neat array of tactical gear: matte-black Kevlar vests, silenced submachine guns, encrypted comms units, and heavy combat knives.

"Anthony and Daniel are already positioning the transport vans three miles down the Sound," Marcus reported, snapping open a magazine and checking the rounds. "We go in through the boathouse at 11:30 PM. We bypass the perimeter entirely. By midnight, we own the server room."

Lorenzo reached down and picked up his father’s crushed pocket watch from the metal dish on the table. The gold casing was dented inward, the hands frozen forever at 11:42—the exact minute the bullet had struck his chest. He slipped the ruined heirloom into the breast pocket of his dark wool coat, right over his heart.

He looked at Sophia.

"You and Emma stay here," Lorenzo said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Marcus and his team will secure the house, but I want you and your daughter completely out of the crossfire."

Sophia looked up, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce defiance.

"No," she said.

Marcus blinked, staring at her as if she had lost her mind. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me," Sophia said, gently shifting sleeping Emma into a comfortable position before standing up to face the towering mafia boss. "For seven years, I’ve cleaned up your messes, cooked your meals, and kept my head down because I was terrified of men like you and the world you live in. But last night, my daughter walked down a dark cellar stairs because your people couldn't keep this house secure. If you're going back there to take back what's yours, I'm coming with you."

Lorenzo stared at her in silence. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the ticking of the old kitchen clock.

A slow, grim smile touched his lips.

"Get a coat, Sophia," Lorenzo said. "We’re going home."
